I see a Chinese-backed team (Giant) are here in NZL competing (as is
Amber Neben).
The football (soccer) world cup and the Olympics are the Big 2
sporting events. The TdF et al must be popping up on the horizon of
the sporting (therefore political) radar in China.
Or not?
China showed it has the will to put on and win the Olympics, could
they do the same for football, and top level cycling?
Absolutely, but, what would prompt them to do so?
They don't seem very interested in the winter Olympics.
What about India, they seem completely uninterested in any sport
except cricket and (field) hockey.
Does anyone know if there is a pro circuit in China.
But mostly I wonder about Africa.
OK, I know you can't do like for like, that's been done to death here.
But look at every distance from 800 to the marathon and there's
(almost always) a tall (ish) skinny black guy or girl at the front. I
presume poverty stops elite cycling - running can be done very
cheaply.
The pro' teams aren't interested because of sponsorship.
