"It's only a flesh wound."

Ouch. What is going on at this year's TdF anyway? I can't see anything
different in terms of cars & motorbikes & road choices. Is it the lack
of any single team taking control?

We're looking more like Rollerball all the time. Which might be good for
audience numbers, but at some point people will be pointing to us as a
sport too dangerous to continue. We suffer concussions and soldier on.
We fly through barbed-wire fences and soldier on. We botch up blood
transfusions and nearly kill ourselves and soldier on.

We all wanted Horner to continue. But who wasn't blown away by the
things he said as he was riding in to the finish, or being taken away on
the stretcher? The 'Tours team doctor knew how bad off he was and
assigned an ambulance and surgeon to stay with him those lonely 20 miles
after the crash. Let the rider decide if it's time. But when the rider
is incoherent, is he the person to make that decision?

"Rollerball" (the original, not the remake) and "They shoot horses,
don't they?"... is that us?

I seem to recall that 1991 was particulary bad, where about 20 riders
were injured in the first week, I remember world champion Rudy
Daehnens was seriously injured, Atle Klasvoll, Robert Millar, so
Lemond's team was decimated. CyclingNews had an article about head
injuries, the current practice has to be revised.

Wow. Looks like someone will be getting a tetanus shot. If he does
start on Tuesday then he has got to have the pain threshold of a block
of granite. I'm amazed he even finished today's stage with wounds like
that.

Hey Mike - you're going over for the last week of the Tour this year,
right? Let's hope there are still enough guys left standing to make
it interesting!

I'm wondering if they're going to institute some last-minute rule
changes allowing substitute riders... a severely-decimated team might
get so desperate they'll be drafting people from the sidelines... maybe
my son has a shot at the Pro level?

I'm really glad that I've got some interesting rides lined up that have
nothing to do with the TdF. Seriously, one of the big draws this year
was Chris Horner; losing him really kicked the wind out of me for a bit.
Beyond that, some classic battles between Contador and Evans and VDB
maybe, except that VDB is out and Contador possibly injured. My worst
fear is an ultra-conservative gameplan by Leopard/Trek, designed to
obtain the yellow through attrition, a plan that just could work.

I want carnage and bedlam, but the type of carnage I want to see is
riders going for it and blowing up, or maybe the opposite and catching
people off-guard. That can still happen, but it's going to be a dynamic
playlist.

In 2003 Hans de Clerc carried the Lanterne Rouge into Paris at 147th.
In 2002 it was Igor Flores at 153rd.
In 2001 Jimmy Caspar at 144th.
In 2000 Olivier Perraudeau at 127th.
In 1999 jacky Durand at 141st.

No, no subsitutes. However, I do expect that "no penalties" and "no
time limits" will be late changes to the rules before the Tour de
Rollerball wraps up.

I think you're misreading the clues. Since the peloton will become
the walking....errr....rolling wounded, there will have to be TUEs
galore for pain and recuperative medication of all sorts.

They're backdooring doping into race legal status. It's brilliant.

The out of competition testing will now be an out of competition dope
distribution system to make sure every rider is sufficiently tuned at
all times. This will also prevent the formation of a strong riders'
union. I believe the next step is to store the out of competition
riders in vats or something.

This is a good assessment of allowing riders to continue when the line
between "tough it out" and insanity have clearly been crossed. Horner not
knowing if he had finished the stage, when he had, should be a wake up
call that medical procedures need to be changed in favor of protecting the
riders.

like a tough guy, but he most fucking obviously is. And a classy
guy. I'm his new fanboi.

You don't get to this level on easy rides all your life, of course
he's tough. It's an iodine wash followed by superglue backed up with
Scotch tape stitches if either of the two top wounds are deep enough.
A local rub with 'white spirit' will remove the sting sufficiently to
sleep and to get off the start line.

Some of it is a bad combination of roads + weather. (1) One stage
where a crosswind combined with narrow roads to make every GC
contender fear that the peleton would split, so everybody and his team
tried to bunch up to much. They all said it was a scary day (2) Wet
roads on a downhill contributed to the crash that took out Vino. I
think it had stopped raining so maybe they took too much risk having
trouble judging the conditions.

And the car crash is just over the top. There is a police
investigation. Talk of law suits. I think drivers will get more
careful.

Why do so many Americans raise the question of whether he had a tetanus
shot? It's not an issue.

1. I'm sure all pro cyclists are up-to-date on their tetanus
inoculations, seeing as pavement surfing is a regular occurrence.
2. Tetanus shots can be given after the fact. I had one last year 10h
after a bike crash.
3. Tetanus is all but eradicated in Western Europe. My doctor had never
seen a tetanus infection in the flesh, so to speak.
