Who are the likely Classics contenders for 2011? Starting with these four-
Gilbert
Boonen
Cancellara
Hushovd
I must be having a bad case of brain death, as there must be quite a few
more obvious choices. Who are they? I'm talking about overall Classics guys,
not specialists or sprinters who might be able to handle something with a
lot of climbing (Flecha?) or one determined by a field sprint (Cav). Boonen-
is he just coming into his prime for the cobbles, which seem to favor the
older guys, or is he now yesterday's news?

Geez, the guy has one off season due to a bad knee and the incredible
misfortune of being the second best guy during Cancellara's best
season ever, and you're writing him off?
Fred
dumbass,
a lot of classics conteners are suspended. diluca, valverde. some had
bad seasons: devolver, cunego, boassson hagen. evans might win
something, ballan, will he ever be good again ? vino won a classic.
liquigas will be a strong all around team next year.

Nope, not writing him off... yet. I wonder how much of the de-emphasis on
Boonen is a result of Cav's rise? Boonen in a GT vs Cav and there aren't
going to be too many opportunities for Boonen to win, not that he had the
opportunity anyway after exclusions and injuries. Let's face it, just a
couple years ago Boonen was Da Man. Will he come back? Does Gilbert on the
same team make that less likely?

Gilbert and Boonen are both classics specialists, but not the same
sort of classic. Boonen will never win L-B-L, for example, but
Gilbert might. Gilbert will never win P-R, but of course Boonen has.
Gilbert may win Flanders one day... I think you see where I'm going
with this.

"I'd also like to win Paris-Roubaix too one day but I need more years of
experience first. The problem with Roubaix is that it can end your
career with one crash. For now I prefer to focus on other races and do
what I'm good at."

"Never" is a long time. I can't imgaine anyone I'd put more trust in, in
terms of accomplishing what he says he's going to do, than Gilbert. If
he says he'd like to win Paris-Roubaix, I wouldn't bet against it.

Dumbass -
He's the dumbass who tried to go pull for pull w/ Cancellara at Flanders
instead of soft-pedaling.
