"Kim Kirchen [...] suffered a heart attack at the Tour de Suisse in June
this year but hopes to resume his career with the aid of an implanted
defibrillator."
Would it be any worse than if he was driving down the autobahn at 200
kph?
Is that even legal? If defibrillators aren't performance enhancing, I
don't know what is.
Only if it's been rigged to go to 11.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't pacemakers be likely to be more
performance enhancing? Not that I'm implying any impropriety, but
Ronnie Hinson in North Carolina is on his second PM has already worn
out the first one.
I'm pretty sure Andy Paulin got one after a couple of episodes back in
the '90's, when he got back into racing (masters - not elite). I heard
it went off a few times during hard training and he called it quits.
Hope it goes better for Kirchen.

I have a friend with one. It hasn't gone off on a ride but it did go off
once while he was sitting at home. Said it was like someone just
sucker-punched him. Not subtle at all.
Absolutely, anything that keeps you alive like food, water or air is
performance enhancing.
