with regard to the winner for all teams in the TdF team time trial, but
rather there is a whole ladder of cut-off times for every placed team.
Every placing has its own maximum time loss. Either the team stays
within that limit and gets their real time, or it doesn't and gets the
predetermined maximum time for that placing. Here are the maximum gaps
to the winner:
2. 20"
3. 30" etcetera, +10" for every next team until:
13. 2'10
14. 2'15 etcetera, +5" until:
21. 2'50
So the second team could be 29.9 sec behind and gets +20", while the 3rd
team, finishing just 0.1 sec behind 2nd, gets no bonus at +30".
I don't think it will change any tactics in the TTT compared to the one
single max time difference, but it will sure stirr up more what-if
discussions during later stages.

This is the same formula that was used for the TTT of the 1985 Tour.
The results were as follows. The real time gaps are displayed first,
followed by the assigned predetermined time differences (in parentheses).

I finally found http://www.letour.fr/2004/docs/reglement_us.pdf (via
Google, not linked from current site as far as I can see).
Interesting results: one team much better, so all other teams outside
their time limits; everyone gets pushed up the ladder onto the finely
spaced rungs. First team livid. I don't think we'll see that 1985
scenario this year, the playing field is more level (allegedly).

Hmm, that was from the "Programme Officiel du Tour 2004" (a publication
from the Société du TdF) that I ordered through journeaux.fr, but the
PDF I found on letour.fr says:

Makes victory less meaningful. Will any serious GC contending team even
try (hard) to win the TTT, or will they save their horses for the other
stages where more time can be gained or lost?

It's also interesting that riders that lose contact with their team
get their real time instead of benefitting from the time limits.

Of course, that was the page I found too, but what I was trying to imply
by "current" was that it was not accessible from the homepage. It is
now; there's a totally different homepage since today.
