Lance didn't wear a yellow jersey in the prologue. ONCE wore theirs
for change and Oscar Friere wore a regular mapei skinsuit not a
rainbow jersey one as road champs tend to do in tour tts.

No: road *TT* champs would do that, in normal length, flat TTs; i.e. an
event that closely resembles that in which they are world champion.

It was previously the case that the Tour was viewed as a single
event, a road event, and thus the appropriate champion was the road
champion, even on the time trial stages.

This was changed in 1999 to allow time trial champions
to wear the stripes in stage race time trials. This thus
excluses the road champion from wearing his.

It has nothing to do with the profile of the course.

UCI rules :
1.3.062 The World Road Champion shall wear his jersey in all road races in the category of which he
is world champion, except in time-trial races and stages, in which he may not wear that jersey,
and in no other race. (amendment came into force on 1st January 1999).

1.3.063 The World individual Time Trial Champion shall wear his jersey in one-day time trials and time
trial stages in the category of which he is world champion and in no other race.
(amendment came into force on 1st January 1999).

To wear the jersey is a right, no?
"shall wear" suggests he must wear it.

I think it would be kind of weird for the 'World Individual Time Trial
Champion' to wear his jersey during a typical stage race climb TT. For me,
that's not the event he's World Champion of.

Right. Friere must wear it in road stages, while Jan Ullrich must wear it
in time trial stages.

Where is Jan, anyway?

Ullrich will wear his time trial suit when it's time for his trial! (The
district attorney's office in Munich has started a preliminary
investigation, as Ullrich could well be in breach of the German drug
laws).
