There are some crazy go-carts out there. 150 hp on a platform that
weighs nothing can MOVE! Getting the power to the pavement's the hard
part, you can end up sitting still and burning your tires.
Eddie Lawson, ex-500GP champion, has a kart with an engine out of one of Kenny
Roberts' GP bikes - it's one of the Roberts-made three cylinder 500cc two strokes.
That puts out about 190+ hp. There are a bunch out there with TZ250 engines; those
put out around 105hp. I believe Lawson was one of the, if not the, first to put that
together. You're right - a driver really needs to work on getting the power out and
not just smoking the tires.

i think that's more than our car.
anyway, this is starting to tie into the other thread about skipping the
rear wheel.

The famous user of one of those Karts is of course Wayne Rainey, former
GP500 rider until a crash made him paraplegic.

I suppose Rainey is probably more well known than Lawson. He's certainly better in
front of a camera than Lawson (in interviews). Lawson won four 500 titles on two
different brands, arguably a greater achievement than Rainey's three in row, all on
Yamaha. It's likely Rainey would have won the title again in '93, when he was
injured. Lawson is surely more technically minded than Rainey, having a reputation as
one of the best at giving feedback to the crew and development riding. That why I
wasn't surprised that he took on the project of stuffing the 500 triple into the
kart. Cool stuff.
At Streiff Kart just North of Paris there are handicap kart rentals.
The owner Philippe Streiff is himself paraplegic after a race car
crash. He organised the Paris Bercy indoor kart racing, e.g.,

snooze.
I was thinking more of the many prominent stories I read when Rainey
first took up racing high-performance karts. I believe it may even have
been Lawson (or Kenny Roberts?) who arranged the construction of his
kart.

I think I've just discovered a new F1 option that provides both cost
control and closer racing.
Plus, I love the lurid drifting.

Okay, I misunderstood what you were driving (har) at there. You're right, Rainey
got a lot of press due to his circumstances. He is quite good at driving karts,
though. I believe Lawson was the one who sorted it kart out for him. As I mentioned,
Lawson is a big technophile. He really likes doing that kind of thing.

We call them Super Modifieds. More or less grew up with them in the
Wichita-Hutchinson area. A short track is one where a Super Modified
goes around the entire track sideways. The sides are open so the
driver can see straight ahead.

Just someone on two wheels...
In his book on Karting, Bondurant states that he opened his karting
school after a conversation with Michael Schumacher in which he asked
him why he raced karts in the off season when it was dangerous and
could jeopardize his career. Schumacher responded that it was the
closest thing to F1.
