But it's sure looking like a great year for another American win.

Valverde is starting to seem more accident prone than Tyler Hamilton,
which does not bode well for his future prospects. That's two straight
TdFs from which he has had to withdraw due to accidents.

That settles it. Hincapie wins GC.

Am I the only one watching the team classification? It's
the usual suspects.

Valverde's not Tyler Hamilton. He's the new Jonathan Vaughters.

That's good news - it means he's clean, of course.

Don't be so sure. There's Landis, Leipheimer, Rogers, Rasmussen, Evans
left. Even his own teamate, Azevedo, has climbed better than GH in the
TdF.

That said, things are looking pretty good for the English speaking
contingent.

I thought it was knee strain or tendonitis or something like that last year.

No... the winner will be some young domestic that nobody has thought
of, who gets in a (typically doomed) breakaway, after which the rest of
the peleton is delayed for 3 hrs when a train crashes in the middle of
the road, emitting toxic gases (etc).

Or maybe Boonan will accidentally win the overall while going for the
green jersey. Of course he will get the green and spotted jerseys as
well. Eyebrows will rise when it is discovered that his hematocrit has
gone from 38 to 49.99... but hell, we need a hero in the worst way...

Valverde will get another shot at the Tour, I hope (and presumably
this years Vuelta). I'm disappointed for Erik Dekker, who crashed
out - sounds like a nesty faceplant - of what was said to be his last
Tour. Dekker has been one of the most entertaining riders of the
past decade or so, even when hampered by injury.

Let's be fair to Vaughters - we can't attribute his record of never
finishing the Tour to a talent for not finishing. He had to rely on
luck for some of it, notably the bee-sting incident.

If you're asking was Vaughters as talented as Valverde, I would
guess no. That's not what I meant to imply by making the comparison.
JV seems to have exited gracefully and to be doing fairly well at
running a developmental team though.

If it was spelled "Rien", perhaps. As it is, I am a prince among men.
