Race report from Texas

This was a one day only race and the thought of doing a 5hr training ride or
driving 5hrs to do a race was an easy decision. The race is run on a 16 mile
loop with the main difficulties being a 700meter hill that averaged 7-10% and
another little hill that really hurt shortly after the big hill. The course had
many false flat sections and it seemed as if there was really no flat ground on
the entire course.
Nick decided that he was going to attack from the gun, but alas so did a lot of
other guys. So after the first 15 minutes of nonstop attacking at 30+mph Nick
and two others get away. Their lead never got more than 1 minute and after
some lack luster chasing by some other teams the break was absorbed after a 20
mile effort. Bret broke a spoke and Rory stopped to give up his wheel why I
waited to pace Bret back to the field. Rory got a REALLY slow wheel change and
he never got within 1 minute of the field again...
The theme of the race was ATTACK. I don't think the field sat up more than 3
times all day. When a break would get caught another would immediately attack.
This lasted the entire 3hrs of racing and really began to take its toll on the
MB(Mathis Bros) team as we were the ones doing 90% of the attacking. Nick
definitely got the most aggressive rider award for the day. After only 45
miles of racing the field of 50 was down to less than 25 and those guys were
really hurting. But those Texans gave us all we could handle all day long and
for all of our attacking and counterattacking we couldn't get 2 guys in a break
to stick. They would let one of us go in a break, but never two. I think the
Texas teams combined to make sure we didn't run away with the race and the
money. The one time we did get me and Nick into a 5 man break the field caught
us courtesy of an 18 wheeler that they drafted all the way to our break that me
and Nick had spent the last 15 minutes driving like mad. Damn truckers.
Well, with one lap(16miles) to go the field was back together and once again MB
attacked with Bret this time taking two riders along for company and they
managed a respectable 20-30seconds but with the break was brought back by York
and Kremke(Sun&Ski). Aarhus(Team Diabetic) was the next to attack and I
followed with 3 others chasing. The 5 man group sat only 10-20 seconds in
front of the field and with Bret trying to bridge so I didn't have to
contribute to the break. Bret was brought back by the field and the break was
once again 5 strong and rolling smoothly.
In the last 8 miles to the finish the field gave up and we had over a minute
lead so the cat and mouse games began. With a perfectly timed move Mike
Nelson(GCCA) attacked the group with 2 miles to go and with no one rider
willing to bring him back we all began to look at each other. I took the
initiative and took a pull and Godsey worked with me to limit our losses to
Nelson. I think that Jarrad and Aarhus would have rather Nelson win than me as
they did no work in the final miles to help. With a mile to go I got Aarhus to
go to the front with Godsey on my wheel and Jarrad in the rear position. It
was all downhill to the finishing 700 meter hill and at the bottom Nelson(GCCA)
had around 10 seconds on us when I attacked. Godsey(Trek/VW) responded and was
on me like paint on a car. The wind had picked up and now there was a decent
head wind now, but I was fully committed at this point. At 300 meters we
caught a fading Nelson and I punched it again desperately to get rid of Godsey
but to no avail. He had a shot at the win now as I was tiring and the hill was
kicking to its steepest point with 150 meters to go and did I mention I lead it
out for him? With my first and second surges not enough to dislodge him I
waited for his kick to the line and as he swung out to come around I found that
little bit extra and held him off to the line.
Steven and Bret took 1 and 2 in the field sprint with room to spare.
