Not entirely sure of the rules here. I think it to be that a gun must
only be carried in the locked boot or trunk of a motor vehicle and
must be cased within 200yds of a public road (dunno about public
footpaths) whether in or out of a vehicle. It must also be unloaded
at this time. I dont think it is possible to legally carry a firearm
uncased within the 200yds rule without special permission from
probably the home secretary. All sporting use (as opposed to
specifically vermin control and hunting) has been pushed to indoor
shooting galleries. Pistols/hand guns are expressly forbidden, so it
is unlikely that a long gun, which is the only one generally permitted
with licensing can be concealed. Even for the few public servants
which are permitted to carry hand guns while in the UK I believe they
not only require the engagement of a safety lock, but required a
double securing of the gun to holster.
The poplution of the UK is expanding and there are few areas where the
safe use of guns is possible due to the expasion of the urban
landscape. Even if technically safe the legitimate use of guns does
cause alarm for people without any direct exposure to them.

Okay. But just to let you know, my .338 Winchester Magnum still has more
energy at 1,000 yards than a .44 Magnum has point blank. And I got a nice
little scope that measures tragectory for that caliber all the way out to 800
yards.

Anron, there's always more that you can't know in a case like this. It's really
sad that your friend did that (and I'm sorry to hear about it) but sometimes there is
nothing friends can really do to prevent it from happening. Especially if the person
is reasonably adept at hiding the things that haunt them. Criminy, even professional
therapists can't prevent it sometimes.
