Farrar seemed to hold him toward the end, so maybe it was a timing
issue. The gap sure was larger from overhead than it appeared from the
road shots.
Fernandez is the Fred of the Day. Even if he were paid to take out the
middle of the pack, he should have started further right. As it was,
he only cleaned out four or five riders. Most of his injuries seemed
to be from being kicked in the head by four or five riders walking
past while he was on the ground...

Derestricted outside of town. No vehicular limit imposed as in
England. 90mph is everday driving on a single carriageway. Typically
two foot clearance to oncoming vehicles. 180mph closing speed is fast
at that clearance. Mark Cavendish has experienced a special
environment. I guess no one told him he can't keep up with motor
vehicles.

Yeah. There was a shitload of people between the incident and anything
that was close to the front of the race. Anyone caught in that
incident wasn't going to figure in the finish. Hell, they were the
tail of the 7 second crowd.

The only thing I saw on TV while passing through a bar on my way to get some
food after my ride was what looked like Boonen laying on the ground pretty
shaken. He didn't look really hurt but it was plain that he wasn't going to
sprint today. Oh, and the announcer said that it was someone else.

Garmin did a good job (Dean and Pate) for Farrar. Milram tried. It
looked like Boonen had no help in the last few K and was just waiting
to get lucky, and was moving up when the crash happened.

I think the pack fodder here reasonably considers being beaten straight
in a sprint to be one thing, and being taken out by force majeure to be
quite another.
But even if he had been there, does anyone think Boonen is a credible
challenger to Cavendish in the first week? Maybe after the mountains
have destroyed the Manxman's legs.

Like he could have avoided Snaefell as a kid. Where else do you think
he developed his power? Oh yes, then there is an exposed coast road
for wind training so I doubt that'll be his downfall. And because
there aren't many miles of roads, he'll as likely done plenty of off
road work meaning excellent on road bike handling. I don't think MC
will be so susceptible to mountain fatigue. Nor do I think he'll lose
time on the descents. It'll be phsychological warfare he'll need most
protection from.

Boonen is probably going for the green jersey. He had a big setback
today, but he can get over smaller climbs better than nearly all the
pure sprinters. In some stages he can score points when most of the
pure sprinters get dropped and score zero. That's how Jalabert got his
green jersey back in the day when him and Museuw were sprinters. Zabel
also had success with that strategy.

Plus it's the Isle of Man is an island, so he probably went swimming,
which is great crosstraining and good for the back, so he won't get
back pain. And they breath air over there, just like in France, so
he's covered that way.

Plenty of herrings, improves the blood flow with a high red cell
count. High quality meat is too expensive on the island for daily
consumption. Keeping the meat fats down lessens the risk of arterial
plaques, another reason for good blood flow. Island beer choice has
reduced in recent years so lessening the draw of the mixed fortune of
a good night out.
