Not saying this is the case here but......you DO know that malicious
code can now be installed in a photo image. Look at the image and
you're infected. It exploites a fault in Windows or Explorer, not sure
which. There is a patch out there somewhere.......

Why else would someone post an image with such an odd message attached
and then not respond further.

Just a thought.
I might be wrong.

So he's looking for the mach one plus attack helicopter that never breaks

No, could be Canada.
If in the US, most likely in the Pacific NW away from the volcanic parts
of the Cascades. But with a file name like stiched, I would wonder.
You really want one of the photointerpreters who can ID Taliban strong

What's this got to do with Australia? They don't have mountains which look

Thanks for those who answered seriously.
This photo is from Airwolf and I didn't say it's great or special. I
just wanted to know where was it taken. I've posted this topic to
couple of groups to increase the chance that someone who has been there

The name of the file should be 'stitched' cause it was made from 2

The quality of the image isn't enough for me to think that it's a clear cut.
I am uncertain.

You use as much ancillary information as possible.
I never really saw much of the Airwolf series. A DOD friend just reopened
up our largest wind tunnel at work for DOD use (Army and USAF). While it
is true that a lot of filming takes place in CA, this scene looks not
quite like anything near the usual filming areas. So DOD helo research
is next door.

If you are going on the basis of TV and film, you look for signature
features in the background (use care as this distracts from story).
So if you are talking say Movie Flat, Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine,
this looks too moist. And that's just 1 grainy/blurry picture.
So by process of elimination, you consider features in other similar
ranges. Also the geometry is not quite right.
So those peaks are glaciated and non-volcanic.
Your lighting has shadows facing you, so you are basically in the S
portion of the sky.

The 3 near by summits aren't Mt. Whitney near Lone Pine.
The configuration doesn't have a satellite peak sharp enough near by to
appear like Keeler or Day Needle. You are trying to ID them on the
basis of geomorphogical. Rick is a geologist: there is a specific name
for the kind of fault-block peak which has one sharp side and a gradual
side which Whitney is. You can't infer anything about the back sides of
these 3 summits.

Not every series or film is done in CA near Lone Pine. Conrad did a
couple of series (High Mtn. Rangers) near Kirkwood and Markleville.
I don't see any distinct signatures of tht area here. If you find the
shooting location history that would help.

It can't be the Trinity Alps (much smaller range, Thompson looks nothing
like these [blocky]). Looking at the long distant snow couloir:
Colorado? Holy Cross w/o the cross?
But then that doesn't reconcile with 3 summits N of it.

Don't discount British Columbia: a cheaper place to film than CA.
I just don't know those 2 areas well enough to ID a photo like this.
It would help to have the entire sequence.

You then look for features/signatures. You look at films and you CAN ID
Whitney: Great Race, Star Trek Generations, etc. GI Jane: The road to
Cottonwood Lakes as Libya. Mt. Williamson's long ridge and twice summits.

Earth science types get trained to look for things and features.
That's all www.asprs.org. The trick is knowing your limitations.
There is a declassified Agency paper by their best analyst on these
kinds of faux pas. But he also wrote a book about some of this:

'He was eager to learn more about the photo-interpretation process.
"Where do you get photo interpreters? How much do you pay them?
How do you train them? Are they satisified with their work?"
--Pres. John Kennedy
He indicated he would like to visit the Center and observe the high technology
of interpretation at work.
Page 58
Eyeball to Eyeball
Dino Brugioni

'Photo interpreters can recognize, identify, and accurately describe
in detail natural and cultural features on photography not apparent to
unsophisticated or untrained eyes. Their writing style, however, is often
cryptic, terse, and military-oriented. Of necessity, this type of
reporting has to be reworked and collated for presentation to policymakers.
Page 282
Eyeball to Eyeball
Dino Brugioni

The non-climbing people you want to ID pictures is at the aforementioned
Center in DC, a windowless highly protected no nonsense building SE of
the Capitol in the Naval yard. I have never been inside.
If I ever get to visit, then the outside of the visit would be the most
I could say anything about.

I am pretty certain. It's not avalanche damage. It's not too
steep for trees. There is a road through the bottom of it.
The only thing that makes me hesitate is that the pattern is
a bit funny in terms of straight property line boundaries. I
suppose an old burn is possible, but doesn't seem as likely.

The photo lacks large downed trees in that area.
But I similarly don't see stumps. It's brush from what I can see.
I can't infer a burn as I see no evidence. But areas which are merely
brushy can be that way for many different reasons.

The Whitney area, for instance, hasn't had major logging for over 60 years.
The nearest (Johnsondale) mill closed down over 26 years ago (over 60
miles away). I don't see the lineaments (the lines) you are refering to.

I am cutting down the Followups to r.b. and r.c. No need to bore
the other groups.

Caveats accepted. However, to my eyes, something about it
just looks like a clearcut. I think it is the relative
density of mature trees abruptly adjacent to no trees at

The definition just isn't there for any definitive judgement. The "road"
could be an artifact of the photgraphy rather than the topography
itself. The "clear-cut" could easily be brush over ledgy ground. There
are no clear signs of the skidder/machinery trails needed to clearcut
such an area. There are no heights from which to string cables for
moving logs as opposed to ground-based machinery.

It's pretty scenery but for forming any judgements as to the activity or
lack thereof, the poor definition admits of nothing but conjecture.

On my brush run in my bear class, I shot 2 fewer bears than my classmate

As my instructor tester said: What? you got 20/10 vision?

What you do is this:
On a clean sheet of paper put the word clearcut, space,

Then use that as a check list and see what's on the scene.

You may be mistaking a forest edge. Some occur naturally.

Yup, that is a typical BC clear-cut that leaves the small peaks looking
like they have a 'Beatles' style haircut to 'try' and slow down
erosion.

They only leave trees along the highways, like that 'old forest' photo
in the BC tourist books. Walk 100 yards into that 'forest' and you come
out to totally cleared land. Most of which won't grow back because the
soil has eroded away....

Where did you get that idea? Things to consider... The two main
Characters ran a Helicopter service so Parts for a Bell 222 would
have been easy to get without many questions.

As for ammo it may have carried over 16,000 rounds for the chain guns,

It could not have taken on more than 12 targets per episode so that's
easily explained away. As for why the government could not find it?

The exterior of Hawke's cabin wasn't filmed at Big Bear Lake. There are
no mountains out there like that: http://oleksy.ovh.org/cabin.jpg
Actually it looks like a montage. The background behind the cabin looks
like some painting. The sky isn't blue.

Some shots were probably filmed at BBL (someone told me that in
Fawnskin) but so far I didn't manage to match the mountain range from
the pictures that google gives me with those from the movie:
http://oleksy.ovh.org/lake.jpg One thing I'm sure. It must be north
shore due to sun position.

From my perspective, yes. I am amazed you got so close. Were you going by just
the image or some of that other stuff about mach one helicopters, etc?

The Tantalus range is not shown, however. It lies, "entirely on the west side
of the mighty Squamish river" (from Kevin McLane's Alpine Select guide). Off to
the right.

Ledge has a flat top and Ledge and Sky Pilot sit next to each other one ridge
south from Habrich. You can even see the snow patch that keeps Fluffy Kitten
wall wet until August. But what really makes it certain is the water and the
dark lump of the Chief on the right, which didn't show on the first image I
looked at.

Well then...
Airwolf the original was filmed in California and Utah.
Airwolf II was filmed in Vancouver.

Take yer pick... but since the base web page has everything Jan-Michael
Vincint then it's more likely Airwolf the original series and thus likely
California. Conduct your follow up research from there...

I have seen this years ago. These are only general areas.

That's what I thought, too, but I also thought I was projecting my own hope
that it was somewhere I recognized lol... actually when Sue mentioned right
up front I pretty much agreed.

Well then, why didn't you include such information in your original post so
that people wouldn't be hopping all over the place and instead concentrate
on a particular region???? You might have gotten a more straight forward
answer!

Do you see British Columbia in this list? Cause I don't. I wrote that
Airwolf was filmed in California.

You might want to be aware that not all portions of films and TV shows
get filmed in consistent locations. It's all about the art of illusion.
It's getting increasingly expensive to live and work in CA.
Vancouver, BC and Baja CA, are common 2nd locations with interiors
and actors in CA.

I can assure you that I can recall no specific peaks like those in the
background of what you have presented. I can easily take you to places
where Star Trek, various Westerns, and all kinds of other films were shot.
You should take heed of those guys up in the Pacific North West.
