Me and the wifey are going to buy a new honda pilot suv. She really
wants the Nav system in it, which is about a $2500 option. While I
was reading AOPA flight training today, I saw a add for the Garmin
296C which states that you can download car maps to the device as
well. I believe the 296 is about $1600.
Does anyone have any opinions or experience with the 296? The best
feature would be that it's $1000 less AND I can use it for
flying/driving/boating? Is it as good as a Auto Navigation system?
Thanks
Shawn
Shawn,
If you are an aviation pilot and want a portable GPS road navigation
system for you car that is portable. Then the GPSMAP 296 is an
excellent unit. Inorder to do the car navigation capability the
option auto kit is required which includes the road map software and a
memory card, dash and bean bag mount to complete this unit for road
navigation. Downloading maps from the computer is required for road
navigation. Call the experts at JA Air Center at 1-800-323-5966 they
have helped many people tremendously with the mulit function
capability of the GPSMAP 296

Lowrance Airmap 1000 is available for under $700 if you shop around. You
can load roadmaps onto memory cards that it can access. All the
equipment/software/mounting hardware to do so, is included with the GPS.
We've owned 2 of them and they work great. Just installed one today in a
recent C172 purchase...
