The thread on Jet Fighters vs. Jet Bombers:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.military/browse_thread/thread/3ff13df45faf9924/0e9e44af524e105b?hl=en&lnk=raot#0e9e44af524e105b

Made me think about the other side of the coin.

How many cases are there of Jet Bombers shooting down Fighters?

Of course, I'm talking about aircraft that were built primarily as
bombers,
not fighters or attack aircraft fitted with bombs.

I remember the 2 MiG kills scored by B-52 tail guns during the Vietnam
War. But are there any other cases?

I'm willing to count bombers refitted as recon planes , such as the
RB-45,
RB-47 & even the RB-36, since it was partially jet-powered.

Just curious.

A couple RB-47 "Ferret Flight" losses are still very sensitive and information is scant, so we may not know for some time if they took any attacking fighters down with them.

An RB-47H was jumped off Wonsan in April '65 by NKAF MiG-17s. The RB was
shot up and was written off on landing at Yokata AB in Japan, but they used
their 20-mm tail guns to shoot down an attacking MiG.

The Kola overflight in '54 by Hal Austin and his crew in an RB-47E had their
plane damaged by a Soviet MiG-17, but they did use their tail guns to keep
the MiGs at a distance.

too bad you restrict it to jet bombers,

"Command Decision" was a 28th Bomb Squadron, 19th Bomb Group B-29 that
became famous for shooting down five MiG-15s,

FWIW:
My youngest brother was a B-52 tailgunner..

Even earlier if we're counting piston engined bombers - Me 262 500042 of
S.KG(J)54 was shot while attacking USAAF bombers on February 9, 1945.
The pilot, Geschwader Kommodore Obstlt. Volprecht Freiherr Reidesel zu
Eisenbach was killed.

Maybe we'll see more bomber defense "gun" kills in the future:

Laser tail gunners: DARPA seeks to use laser weapons to defend
aircraft from rearward attack:
