So, how does the Super-Hornet/AIM-120D combo compare to the now-
defunct Tomcat/Phoenix combo?

Its in service and is affordable. The F-14 was a one trick pony with
a high maintenance requirement and the Phoenix was of dubious
utility against anything more agile than a Backfire.

The main advantage of the Phoenix was not its range as
the rules of engagement rarely permitted usage at anything
like that. Being semi-active it did not required the launcher
to illuminate the target as did AIM-7 Sparrow.

AIM-120 is also semi-active and the D version has a range
thats close to the practical range of the Phoenix.

Did you mean fully-active terminal homing? As far as I know,
both Phoenix & AMRAAM use that.

well, if you have solid evidence on the Tomcat/Phoenix being fully
defunct, I guess is your patriotic duty to present said evidences to the
Pentagon...

Best regards from Italy,
