It seems to me higher defense sales is a good way to make hard currency and fight the national debt so why not increase sales and approve more stuff for sale to allies?

Arm the heck out of our allies while we're at it, and it's all good!

Until they become enemies. You may recall who the number
one export customer for the F-14 was.

Hmm... no. I'm guessing that either no one else went for them or the US decided future exports were not a good idea. (Despite all the F-15s sold, for example, which turned out OK.) Did the F-15 cost less than the F-14? I am guessing that due to the Phoenix system and the swing wing the Tomcat was more expensive.

I do see Keith's point that being confident that the nation one sells the stuff to will stay friendly is a big part of any arms deal. Not just the current government but one that may, um, come into office in the future.

No which may be somewhat to the point.

Don't forget the past administration that sold F-16s to anyone who had
the money to pay for them, and some that didn't.

Yet strangely, not Taiwan. Given the Taiwanese have F-16s already I don't understand why more cannot be sold.

Venezuela having F-16s is interesting, though I am not sure what their planes' current condition is.

Military exports are as much part of nefarious power balance and
influence calculations as economic plans. Irans F-14's, even under
the theocratic regime
balanced Hussein's Bathist Iraq so you may find it convenient to sell
weapons to unreliable nations anyway, eg Pakistan. Personally I
rather prefer the Bathist regimes of Syria and Iraq to anything that
those countries had in the past or will ever have in the future.
Compared to the Alternative Baathists were good people. AIPACS
vinditive effect on US policy will eventually ensure the victory of
Islam in the middle east and hopefully the demise of Israel.

Of course there are ways and means, during the Falkland War Britain
asked France for the disable codes for the Exocet missile used so
impunely against the Royal Navy. This was a direct Thatcher to
Mitterand "converstation" with the French President refusing
(presumably to protect the integrity of Frances weapons exports),
claiming he suffered subsequent mental healthy problems because the
British Prime minister threatened to use nukes. (Perhaps nuclear
SAM's). (I rather think the snivelling race traitor deserved to
suffer). Wish Thatcher had of used her impressive balls to deal with
Britains real enemies.

Really? Can you provide a reference where Thatcher threatened to use any nukes during the Falklands War?

Or a reference to Exocets having a radio controlled remote detonate
function?

I had my identity stolen once. I didn't worry too much. In the next
week, I got a sympathy card and 20 bucks from the thief. Do your worst.
A 6x9 cell with a new husband called Bubba awaits you.
