Bad news for the Taliban, to the West the fighting in Afghanistan *was*
basically a game. If the West had taken the war seriously it would have
been far worse for the Afghanis. There was no call up of conscripts or
destruction of civilian areas - Western strategy when fighting powerful
enemies.

The hunt for Osama bin Laden was real. So was the destruction of his
organisation. The rest of the fighting in Afghanistan we were just
adults playing naughty children.

As for winning or losing - bin Laden is dead. He and his men fled. The
USA can send its men and drones to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and
Libya. Where as Muslims wishing to visit the USA have to ask a
Christian for permission.

Having spent a little time in the Air to Ground War, unless you
are being fired on, it's a game. Especially on mission debrief
where we had chips, dip and beer watching the films. Even ground
support crews were invited to those films back then. On every
fire ball hit, the cheers in the hangar would make the same
sounds as a touchdown in the Superbowl today. It's not like
being a ground troop where it's up close and personal. And the
math is much higher. Take it from me (and this confuses my VA
Shrink), never do the math. The way to deal with it all is to
keep it like a game that turns real every once in awhile.

I understand what he is talking about. It's his way of dealing
with it now that it's over for him. Sanity and all that rot.

Reminds me of the Armored Vehicles based on Dodge 4X4 chassis of
the early 80s we used for escorting the Nuke Payloads and
Missiles to the silos.

What is interesting is, the "Peacemaker" is still out there and
being used by Law Enforcement. Many have had different chassis
put under them keeping the same body with some modification.

Unless Pakistan keeps launching terrorist attacks like the Mumbai
massacre, or the attack on the Indian parliament.

Then they might end up provoking a conventional conflict, with all
the attendant dangers of nuclear escalation.
