I love it when articles use the term "gravity bomb". It sounds so futuristic! But in hindsight, aren't ALL bombs gravity bombs?

Its not exactly a new idea, the USAAF had such a weapon in WW2
without the smart guidance of course. The weapon was actually designed
in Britain by an RN officer but the RAF preferred the bigger Tallboy
weapon.

It is a real term, used to differentiate them from glide bombs like the
Walleye or JSOW.

Where do they ever come up with the names for these organizations?! If
they cut anything in the DoD budget, it ought to be the committee that
comes up with names for other committees!

or rocket-boosted like Durandal.

I suppose "free-fall" would be more accurate.....

As a one-ton class weapon you ain't going to see that on the F-22, ever.

A pity because now that the "Queer eye for the flyboy" team has spotted the problem with their vests, they'll be back up around 12 miles high.

No, but there are tons of birds that can haul it including the
Bone. They are looking into converting the B-2 to carry it.
Fighters never could carry the MOPs.

The F-15Es are one of the main platforms for the GBU-28 "bunker buster", and that is what is being replaced here.

List of aircraft on Earth that can do the stealth bunker buster mission: B2 and F-35.

And the GBU-28 weighs only 5000 lbs. It won't do the job on the
Iranian Nuclear Bunker. This is why the new bomb was needed.

The New Bomb is too large for the F-15E. And the F-35 doesn't
have a ghost of a chance to get off the ground with it. A Buff
already has been tested using it. Of course, the Buff has a very
large bombbay and can pick up a house if you can get it inside
the bay. This has been the test bird.

The B-2 is progged to get a mod to enable it to carry two of
them. One in each bombbay. They have already concluded that the
B-2 is the only Aircraft with the survivability to deliver the
weapon. You hang that 32 in by 22 foot bomb on a Fighter and it
..... well, it's just foolish to expect it to get to it's
target. The F-35 might get off the ground but it will stand out
like a beacon in the night on radar.

This thing is so much larger than the GBU-28, it's not funny.
Right now, the only AC that can carry it and drop it is a B-52.
Possibly the B-1. They are doing mods to make it fit inside a
B-2 which is the ONLY Aircraft on the face of the earth with the
pure capability of delivering it on the target it's designed to
hit in a contested air environment.
