Smaller than any car alternator are the units fitted to riding lawnmowers
and garden tractors by John Deere, Kubota, and others.

Try your local farm implement dealer. I haven't been able to find a net
source for these things.

Farm alternators aren't small. One of the smallest I've seen isn't cheap.
Go to Jegs online and look for a Shogun alternator. Weighs 6 pounds and is
brushless. I think it's only something like 20 amps though. IIRC, costs
about $350.

Clare,

I didn't see the "LAWN" in the tractor the first time. I just didn't think
the 120 amp unit in my Steiger would save much weight. 8-)

If it's from John Deere, chances are Jegs will be cheaper.

pounds.

The smallest alternator I've seen is on a John Deere deisel Gator. It's about
3" in diameter and 2 1/2" deep. I don't know what it weights but it can't be
much. Seems to put out lots of power though we use then for transport in an
underground mine with lights on always plus a strobe and a radio.

I own a John Deere Dealership and the alternator used on the Diesel Gator or
the 322 are small, light, and if I remember correctly put out 15 amps. If
you will email me at sfg...@teleport.com, I'll send you the part number,
price and shipping weight.

It's a disappointment that you couldn't post that information to the group.
This forum is IDEALLY suited for such an exchange,
especially for a 'birds of a feather' price break ??????

Otherwise, most of us have John Deere dealers in the neighborhood and can cut
out the middleman... the US Post Office. <g>

I have two options for those interested in a small alternator
1: The alternator from a John Deere Diesel Gator
Part Number: AM877740
Output: 40 amps
Weight: 2.96 lbs.
Price for group: $ 291.67

2: The alternator from a John Deere 322
Part Number: AM877557
Output: 20 amps
Weight: 1.81 lbs.
Price for group: $ 145.49
Note: This alternator requires an external voltage regulator part
number
AM101406 price $60.51 weight .2 lbs.
I can ship these anywhere in the US for a $5.00 John Deere UPS and handling
fee. When I order these, I can have my John Deere warehouse ship them
directly to you and they should arrive in a day or two. If you are
interested, email me at sfg...@teleport.com

Are these both belt drive? I know many smaller engines use flywheel
alternators....

Both of these alternators are belt drive. I emailed DTAC, John Deere's
technical service division on Saturday to get a max rpm spec. With any
luck, I'll hear from them on Monday.

I just heard back from John Deere on the speed rating for these alternators.

DTAC Case # 538049 - Alternator AM877740

I received your DTAC case concerning the possibility of selling
alternators if they could sustain 5000 rpms. I pulled the print on
AM877740 and examined the specs. This alternator should perform
fine at sustained 5000rpms. Regulated output
should be approximately 40Amps. Also pulled print of AM877557 but it was
in Chinese. I can't read Chinese but appears specs
are slightly lower on this alt. Hope this helps.

Thanks to Robert Bates for finding and posting this information on Deere
little alternators.

I did some digging myself, here is some Kubota information:

There was a poster in one of the aviation newsgroups within
the past few weeks who worked or owned a John Deere
dealership. He mentioned a couple of models of alternators
they carried that were small.

Perhaps one of the regulars ( or that poster ) could post
the details..... sorry but I didn't pay too much attention
to it at the time.
