I think where the styling change completely fails is on the Hatchback. The
Civic hatchback was ugly before (IMHO one of the ugliest cars on the road) and
it remains ugly, rounded chassis or no. I think this is a shame, because the
VTEC-E engine in the VX hatchback is a real marvel (I won't quote the milage
figures to you again...)
Back to the sedan: The LX I drove was impressive, but the Civic EX sedan
sounds like a car to reckon with. ABS, 125bph vtec engine, 14" wheels (as
opppsed to the 13" wheels on all other Civic models), front and rear
stabilizer (anti-roll) bars... I'm test-driving one as soon as it becomes
available.

Well, I just finished chasing one I saw on the road across town back to
the Honda dealer (it just came off the truck and the mechanice was giving
it a test spin). I didn't ask to drive it, but I glommed it anyway.
Yep, it does look like the new Tercel (I don't dislike it, but me thinks
the previous distinctive styling was better). What popped my eyes was
the price. A 4 Dr DX with no options was stickered at $10.8K. Add
the (IMHO) obligatory A/C, and you're pushing $12K for a minimally equipped
4 Dr "Econobox". A couple I know drove off a slightly better equiped
4 Dr Escort LX for under $10K. I'm under whelmed.
While I was there, we also glommed the new Camry. Since I really
disliked the old styling, I have to admit the new sheetmetal was a
big improvement. It looks a little bit like the Maxima, but no where
near the rip-off of the new Civic. The only thing that did surprise
me was the size: I was expecting a bigger car. I climbed into the
rear seat and my 6' frame touched the roof. Hmmmmmm. For the price
bump (a 4 cyl LE was stickered at about $17k, a 4 cyl XLE was about
$19.5K) over the '91, I was expecting a much larger car. To call
this a direct competitor for the Taurus would be over reaching.
But, yaz takes what ya can get!

I'll go you one better and say that the 4-door Civic looks great. The high
trunkline may not appeal to everybody, but I like the nose-down appearance
and the last-generation-Accord-inspired taillights. The downside is that
the price continues to push Honda out of the market segment which made them
famous.

Tsk tsk. I don't know about ugliest, but it seems to me that the Civic
design peaked with the ultra-utilitarian 1986 model and has been sliding
ever since.

I've heard this said many times, and woulod like to clear up one thing. There
is no way that Honda could have copied the Tercel. They don't build a car in
one month. It takes about four years...

To me, the back of the 1992 Civic looks a bit like the back of the
1992 BMW 325i...

A scary thought. When I first saw a '92 325i on the highway, I thought it
was a new Escort GT until I closed to within a hundred yards or so. It
doesn't look as cheap as its predecessor, and yet its styling sends mixed
signals. Enclosed lamps on a Bimmer? Z-24 Cavalier wheel spats? Ewwww.
