1992 Buick Lesabre, Please Help!!

when i took it to the shop the guy said it was
a problem with a Position Sensor Magnet Interrupter. He then told me that
the parts were cheap but the labor was about $300+.
I need to know, is the $300+ dollars on the level or am I being taken.

Replacing the interrupter magnet is essentially the same labor as
changing the timing chain and sprockets, the magnet fits into the
back side of the camshaft sprocket.
You'll need a puller to remove the harmonic balancer and the tool
for setting the crankshaft position sensor to shutter wheel gap.
$300 at a repair shop is pretty close to fair.

I don't have any _overhead_. Except the electric lights in the Car
Barn. Those are on anyhow, regardless, so it's all profit.

Can't you use a cardboard matchbook cover? I've gapped a lot of
things with just that. Just not on a car.

The more I look at it, the more involved it gets. If you've done this
before yourself, your word on this topic is final as far as I'm
concerned.
I would not look forward to the task, and would view it as a PITA
rather than a source of revenue. But you can't spend money if you
don't have it to begin with. Given that I could afford the part
alright, I would have to suck up the labor by doing it myself, if I
could.

My 90 Reatta seems to signal the same sort of failure. The mechanic who
checked
it out for me before I bought it said to forget it. Runs just fine the way
it is.
I am building up an engine to put in it anyway, and that will have the new
sensor
and magnet.
Makes me wonder why mine runs fine and yours hesitates ?????

Overhead is not a reason to give skilled labor away.

Matchbook cover would not reach, but you can cut a couple of
strips from a gallon anti-freeze jug and use them...
