1989 ford tempo. has had several thermostats put into it, and they all
consistantly go bad. currently, the engine will warm up if not driven (ie
parked or start stop driving.) any open road driving will quickly reduce
the engine heat to below dash guage reading level, and warm/hot air cant
be gotten out of the heater. if stoped and parked for a few, will build
up engine heat again. car has ac in it. ideas please?

Thermostat continuously open.
(or removed by previous owner)

It is likely that somewhere along the line, someone has replaced a
heater hose on your car and did not reinstall the restrictor to the
heater. That cause some rather peculiar noise from the heater as if
it had air in it and some goofy enhine temperatures on it. There is a
TSB out from Ford on the problem. The restrictor only cost a couple
of buks and is installed by slipping into one of the heater hoses.
With that, you should be in good shape

BTW, you may have to look for a parts man who is willing to dig it out
of the parts books. The Lincoln had the same problem.

Good luck!

SEVERAL thermostats going bad???

Are they all the same brand?

How often is this?

If replacing the thermostat didn't correct the problem, I would
look at another cause for the engine running cold.

Like the fan coming on too much or at the wrong time (fan relay,
wiring, ECT, etc.)

Snip
Dumb question. You are putting in the correctly rated thermostat
aren't you ie 195 degree not 180 or 165 ?

I had the same thing happen on my 88 Mercury Topaz. I didn't go through a
bunch of thermostats but it happened when I replaced the oe one. The
problem was the thermostat was set for a lower range and would open sooner
than a standard thermostat and causing the engine to run way cool and no
heat coming out of the core. Talk to your local ford dealer or reputable
garage and ask them what is the appropriate temp for your car and get that
one.
