Only can be done on road courses. The oval would not be competitive or safe.
Prima Donna NASCAR doesn't
Thay have to pretty soon, fans are getting pissed planning vacations
to see the race get postponed to the day they fly back home....
Nascar has a responsibility to the fans on this topic.
Also NASCAR has a respondibility to the networks. Re-playing last
years race is not a way to get good ratings. Like a pathetic ESPC

I am not a NASCAR (far preferring CART), but CART and F1 only race in the
rain on road courses, not ovals. In F1, there are no ovals, but in CART
there are, and they don't race in the rain there.
For example, this year;s Indy 500 (an IRL race) was delayed 3 1/2 hours by
rain. Same with Motegi, a CART oval. Even the Cleveland CART road course
(a circuit with sharp turns) was red-flagged last year.

Before today when was the last time that a race was postponed to
the next day because of weather?

Apparently they don't at the second-largest motorcycle event in the
country.
The Loudon Classic was postponed to Monday morning this week.

Which racing series are you comparing NASCAR to? I'm just curious as to
which form of racing runs ovals in the rain.
NHRA doesn't even run in the rain, and they don't have to turn the car...

Once at Martinsville they called the race before I had made it into the
parking lots, so only a u-turn was required and it was not downpouring rain.
Nascar should call the races earlier if possible. Yesterday it was 3:30PM,
they probably knew at 10:00 am that the chance of running the race was slim
if none.

Man, my memory is shot.
From NOL
The early summer Pocono NASCAR Winston Cup race was last re-
scheduled by rain in 1979. Cale Yarborough won the Coca-Cola 500
by defeating Richard Petty on the Monday following the original
race date.
The last postponement of a NASCAR Winston Cup race to Monday was
at Lowe's Motor Speedway last October.

Damn right it's not. I didn't say they should or shouldn't, I'm wondering if
they will - what do the rules say?

IDIOT!!!!!!
They pave parking lots now with porous material that lets water go
through. Wonder if they could do this to ovals?

Even if it ever happened, the pavement would still be wet, maybe not coated
with water, bet wet none the less. With the way cars are setup to run
constantly turning left, with the stagger, weight distribution, etc. there
is no way that they could ever race in the rain on an oval. The car would
want to spin out even at low speeds.
In heavy rains, no. You'd have to be a salmon to scale Turn 4. But
they raced on a wet track in '98. 'Course, it pretty much ended the
season, if not the careers, for Duhamel, Wilson and Metzger too. US
Superbike, World Superbike, FIA, 600SS, Formula Xtreme... all race in
the wet (within reason).
I dunno if I'd rate Loudon that high on the event calendar. Laguna
Seca, Road America, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio... they're all pretty much
second fiddle to the Arai 200, even though Daytona isn't that terrific
a roadrace track.
The 24-Hour Rolex race does Daytona in the rain. And the dark, some in
open cockpit cars. They finished in the rain last year and practiced
in the rain this year. See
http://209.86.230.9/corvette/daytona99/finish.jpg
Granted, it's the road course but it incorporates everything but
NASCAR Turn 1. They won't do 200mph of course, but they're certainly
capable of it.
Dunno what the _rules_ say, but Goodyear has a NASCAR rain tire, the
cars are set up to accept windshield wipers and tail marker lights,
and....where have you guys been? ;) This is old news; there just hasn't
been rain at a road course yet. It's gonna be wild when it happens, though.
Watkins Glen would be the best first rain race, I think....

Before you buy.
The F1 race at Indy will use some of the oval too, and will race even if
it rains.
But the bigger audience, and bigger revenue, BY FAR, is from television,
which does not want a race on a Monday out of prime time.
Can you see how using SOME of the oval and the WHOLE oval are different?
Why? You can't slip or spin on just part of the oval?
You sure can, and there's no runoff in Indy T2 or T1. Many of the F1
drivers are worried about this, as their cars are not means to withstand
contact with walls.
Half of speed is momentium.
