I'm sure the spreadsheet below will be scrambled so here's the thought
experiment:

If NASCAR were to incorporate both quarters and reversed fields at the
quarters how could they encourage hard racing to the front rather than
sandbagging.

What if the top 10 at the end of each quarter got bonus points?

1/4 1/2 3/4
1st 10 12 15 37
2nd 9 11 14 34
3rd 8 10 13 31
4th 7 9 12 28
5th 6 8 11 25
6th 5 7 10 22
7th 4 6 9 19
8th 3 5 8 16
9th 2 4 7 13
10th 1 3 6 10
235

I was trying to see what would happen if the 10th place car at the
first quarter got 1 point and everything slowly graduating up from
there. I was pleasantly surprised at how low a total number it ended
up adding to the race.

This silly additional bonus scheme would only add 535 total points to
a race's value and could be seamlessly added to the current point
system.

I'll bet it would keep the thrill factor high enough to increase
ratings.

Here's another idea. First, take the current points system and
multiply it by 10 (so 1st pays 1850 pts, 2nd 1700, etc). Then,
for each lap led, add 5 points. And for each lap in 2nd thru 5th
place, add 1 point.

There's a huge incentive to try and lead laps. Lead 200 laps
of a race, and you add 1000 points to whatever you get for your
finishing position. Even just running at the front of the field,
in the top 5 for 200 laps, you add 200 points.

yeah right, then we can watch JJ win by 5000 points, lol

I was bored so I calculated the points this way for just the 10 chase
races, of course, I could only do the points for final position and laps
led since we don't have stats available for top 5 laps ( that would have
been WAY TOO MUCH work anyway ).

I did find one flaw though. There would have been two races during the
chase where 3rd place received more points, 35 and 230 more, than the
winner, we can't have that now can we?

And then declare that the bottom 8 get zero points ................ to keep
the rolling, patched up wrecks off the race track
