A few interesting things in the article. DEJ's struggles
are part of the reason for NASCAR's problems, DP and JPM
are drivers that will spawn interest in NASCAR, he doesn't
know why the ratings are down.
Well, I'll say this much - Danica should make restarts & pitting under green
more interesting.....Oh, & maybe with her help, Na$car won't have to throw
as many bogus debris caution flags.
And we might see some interesting fights when Sam Hornish crashes her.
The poll on foxsports about Danica is a bit susrpising, 60% of people think
she will succeed.
Will Danica Patrick succeed in NASCAR?
14% Yes, instantly
44% Yes, but it'll take time
41% No, she'll regret trying stock cars

These people need to find another sport to follow.

I think it depends a lot on how you define succeed.
If you think it's getting more media attention than anyone else,
then she will succeed.
I don't see anyone coming close to the coverage she will get.
She will be driving a good car, for a good owner,
and bear in mind, it is the Nationwide series, so good finishes
are not out of the question at all.
Top 15's for her would be a success to some.
Others would only consider top 5's.
Others will figure if she does get a good finish
it's because she's in better stuff.
It just depends.
How one defines succeeds,
or how much one wants to see her fall on her face.
Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Please.

Three yrs from now IF, she is somehow in Cup, she will not be a
successful driver.
Well, I noticed that they now have t-shirts and posters for sale,
and are taking pre orders for 60 dollar diecasts.
Pretty succesful for running about a half dozen laps in a stock car.

You should keep your words soft and sweet.
Tomorrow, you may have to eat them

That could very well be.
But, the response was she will succeed in NASCAR.
Not will she be a successful driver.
She has already succeeded.
She's landed a top ride,
and is on track to sell a bunch of stuff.
Hasn't taken a green flag yet.
Well, *I* don't consider merchandise sales, as being a success in NASCAR.
YMMV
Gee, I guess I better get on the "list" now.
BTW, when has she run laps in a NASCAR?
Then JR is definitely not a success in your book!
Don
ARCA isn't NASCAR.
He's won more races than a lot of other NASCAR regulars.

There is no such thing as a NASCAR.

Dan didn't say NASCAR, he said "stock car". (of course, ARCA
cars are closer to Cup/Nationwide than anything else which falls
under the heading of stock car).
John
I knew you were going to say that, pedant.
Danica might well be more mentally competent to be in NASCAR right now
than her car owner, but Dale Jr. is the _LAST_ person I would want in
charge of Danica Patrick's start in NASCAR...
Mike (... unless you are openly looking to sabotage it!)

Fine.
But there are plenty of people that are successful in NASCAR
that have never taken a green flag.
There is more to being sucessful than winning a race.
Danica is a successful race car driver.
She has done more than anyone here could ever imagine.
In IRL or NASCAR.
She is in demand, has secured top rides, good sponsorship
potential,
an enormous amount of media blitz, and a large fan base.
Not to mention being a multi millionaire.
That... is success.
Take out the "a".
Drivers?

OK, if you say so.
You're right, my mistake.
There is no such thing as a NSCAR.

To be fair, I have to point out that TS didn't say "A", he
said "a".

that doesn't make much more sense, though.

Rick Hendrick is part owner of the team. He has done pretty well with
start-up drivers.
Fair enough. I'll resubmit my response as follows...
There is not such thing s a NASCAR.

Hmmm, that got me curious. Here's a list of Hendrick's drivers:
Geoffrey Bodine - 7 wins. Not really a startup driver, he had run
a couple of years for backmarker teams previous to Hendrick.
Dick Brooks - old-timer, ran his last race at Hendrick I think.
Brett Bodine - ran his first race for Hendrick. Not a startup
success.
Tim Richmond - 9 wins. Not a startup, he already had 4 Cup wins
before joining Hendrick.
Jim Fitzgerald - Winston West regular who ran Riverside for Hendrick.
Rick Hendrick - yes, the owner himself ran two races. Not a success.
Benny Parsons - old-timer.
Darrell Waltrip - 9 wins. Old-timer.
Rob Moroso - startup driver, ran one race in Cup.
Ken Shrader - 2 wins. Not at startup, had 2 wins in Cup before
joining Hendrick.
Bobby Hamilton - one race (this was part of the Days of Thunder
filming).
Tommy Kendall - one race. Road course ringer.
Kyle Petty - one race. I don't now recall why Petty ran one race
in the #42 with Peak sponsorship with Hendrick as owner - the rest
of the season was for Sabates.
Greg Sacks - 1 win. Argueably a startup, had run a few races in
his own car prior to Hendrick.
Stan Barrett - ran one race.
Jimmy Horton - two races, journeyman driver who filled in for an
injured Waltrip.
Ricky Rudd - 4 wins. Old-timer.
Hut Stricklin - two races.
Sarel van der merwe - one race, road course ringer.
Jeff Gordon - 82 wins. A definate start-up success.
Al Unser Jr - one race.
Terry Labonte - 12 wins. Old-timer.
Jeff Purvis - one race. (as I recall, Hendrick was paying back a
favor to someone with this ride).
Todd Bodine - two races, journeyman driver filling in for injured
drivers.
Ricky Craven - startup driver, 2 seasons, no wins. Had some
success later.
Jack Sprague - one race, journeyman driver filling in for injured
Ricky Craven.
Wally Dallenbach Jr - not a startup, had several years in Cup before
joining Hendrick.
Randy LaJoie - nine races, journeyman driver filling in for injured
Ricky Craven.
Ron Hornaday Jr - 1 race. I think he was a road course ringer for
some reason, altho he's not renowned as a road course driver.
Jerry Nadeau - 1 win. Argueably not a startup, had 2 seasons in Cup
before Hendrick.
Jimmie Johnson - 47 wins. A definate startup success.
Joe Nemechek - 1 win. Had 2 wins in Cup before joining Hendrick.
David Green - two races, journeyman driver filling in for injured
Jerry Nadeau.
Brian Vickers - 1 win. Startup driver, 4 seasons with Hendrick.
Kyle Busch - 4 wins. Startup driver.
Casey Mears - 1 win. Argueably not a startup, had 2 seasons with
Ganassi before joining Hendrick.
Dale Earnhardt Jr - 1 win. Not a startup, had 17 wins before
joining Hendrick.
Brad Keselowski - 9 races. Startup driver.
Mark Martin - 5 wins. Old-timer.
So, looking at all that we see Hendrick has had a mess of drivers who
only ran one or a few races. Out of those who would be called full
time, most were experienced before coming to Hendrick. Of the ones
who really started at Hendrick, we have:
Rob Moroso
Greg Sacks
Jeff Gordon
Ricky Craven
Jimmy Johnson
Brian Vickers
Kyle Busch
Brad Keselowski
Of those, Gordon and Johnson were definate successes, and you can
count Kyle Busch in that group too, even tho his real success has
come since leaving Hendrick.
Greg Sacks was definately not a success. The same goes for a long
list of drivers who Hendrick brought in with a couple of years
experience, like Casey Mears.
Craven was not a success at Hendrick, altho he was later before
being injured. The same may be the case for Vickers, who seems to
be developing at Red Bull.
Keselowski seems likely to be a success, but not at Hendrick. And
of course Moroso was an idiot and killed himself, so we'll never
know if he'd have been a success.
So 3 of 8 "true startup" drivers were successes. That's a pretty
good ratio, and better than I'd thought (one tends to forget that
drivers like Dallenbach and Nadeau were not rookies at Hendrick).
Overall, out of 39 drivers 10 have more than 1 win (almost 25%).
That too is a remarkably good ratio.
So I think arm's assertion that Hendrick is pretty good at picking
talent is supported.
John
(not up to doing the same for Roush right now)
