To give us some on-topic stuff to comment on, as opposed to
the weirdnesses of post propagation thru Usenet, and since
Cindy's probably still in need of news, here's a couple of
items that struck my attention from Jayski & other sites.

1) the operators of the Milwaukee Mile have collapsed and
lost their 2010 dates. NASCAR has made the best of a bad
deal by scheduling a Nationwide event at Road America to
replace the race at Milwaukee (no idea what the IRL has/will
do for their event). This means there'll be road course
events at both Sears Point and Road America on the same
weekend, which will undoubtably cause the "road course ringers"
some distress.

comment - this is a shame, the Milwaukee Mile is a track with
a huge history, and it is an interesting and challenging track
in it's own right. Especially the loss of their Indy car race,
which has been run the weekend after the 500 for eons, is a
great pity.

2) ESPN shuffles their lineup. Marty Reid takes over as
play-by-play (I beleive he did the Nationwide races last year?),
Dr Punch moves back to pit reporting. Everyone else stays in
pretty much the same roles.

comment - in and of itself, this is good - Dr Punch has never
clicked as a play-by-play guy. But a poor lineup in the booth
is only one of ESPN's many problems, and there's no indication
that they understand and will address any of the others (FWIW,
ESPN has also been making a hash of the college bowl games, so
it's not just NASCAR they've lost the plot on. Calling UCF the
"Black Knights" all game long shows the level to which the
"leader in sports" has fallen).

3) Budweiser shootout rules have changed, again. Now all the
drivers from the previous years chase qualify, plus the ROTY,
plus all previous NASCAR champions, plus anyone who's ever won
a race at Daytona. At least 29 drivers who have been somewhat
active in the CoT era qualify.

comment - this is marginally less silly than last years rules,
but still pretty much meaningless.

4) Tony Stewart racing in Australia. He took his WoO team down
there to run a few races in their summer sprint car series. So
far Stewart has a 7th; his regular WoO driver, Donny Shatz, has
a win.

comment - I see where Stewart is quoted as saying driving the WoO
car has left him worn-out and sore. It's interesting that sprint
cars should be more physically demanding to drive than Cup cars.

5) Motorsports Authentics is bankrupt. The company which sells
various driver and team logoed merchandise has never been profitable,
and is only alive now because the big teams (Hendrick, Roush, etc)
have not collected on tens of millions of dollars owed them for
licensing rights.

comment - I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the general decline
in interest in NASCAR, or a specific instance of NASCAR mis-management.
Motorsports Authentics was strong-armed into being several years
ago when NASCAR mgmt (acting in their role as ISC mgmt) decided
they needed to be part of the memorabilia trade, it didn't look
like a good idea at the time, and apparently it wasn't.

6) number of crashes and spins decreased over 2008 (which in turn
decreased over 2007). According to USA Today, there were 8.5%
fewer incidents in the past seasons races. The number of caution
periods declined 4.5%.

comment - I'm not entirely sure what this represents...the obvious
conclusion is that drivers are not pushing their cars as much, as
close to the limit, as they once were. (it is clear, tho, since
the number of yellows has not declined in proportion to the number
of wrecks & spins, that NASCAR has upped the proportion of garbage
cautions significantly...something that anyone watching the races
could have told us).

It could be that sprint cars make the driver use different sets of
muscles or make the driver use them in different ways.

Why bother.... We'll just divide it into six different strings in the
same thread. (((^:

Yes, I see in another quote from Stewart where he says exactly
that, that it uses different muscles. He says he only runs the
sprint car for 3 races a year, and that doesn't keep him in shape.

Well, I sometimes think that when there's several different subjects
in a post it discourages people from answering at all. Whereas if
there's just one, people can quickly add their thought to the thread.
