Steckly who was making only his second appearance at this prestigious event
had trouble early in practice when the motor developed problems. It was
later diagnosed as a broken valve stud. The team decided that they would
change the motor for qualifying on Saturday and worked late into the night
to effect the changes. Forty-two cars took to the track early on Saturday
morning looking for one of the thirty-eight spots available. Steckly
posted the seventeenth quickest time over all and was happy with his
qualifying effort and credited the hard work of his team for the result.
Thirty-eight cars took the green flag for the start of the Castrol 100 with
the #22 Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac in the seventeenth position.
Steckly again employing his patient style was picking off competitors one at
a time and had just set his sights on tenth place runner Peter Vanderwyst
when the motor quit just five laps from the finish. A very disappointed
Steckly said after the event "We changed motor builders this year as we were
looking for more horsepower. We were good early in the season but motors
have become a problem for us in the last coupe of events. We will have to
take the Erb/AW Pontiac back home and go back to the drawing board with our
motors."
Steckly unofficially moves into fourteenth in the Castrol Super Series point
standings heading into the seventh event of the year at Autodrome St.
Eustache, just outside Montreal on Saturday July 28th.
Podium finishers include 1. #66 Robin Buck in the UAP Napa Pontiac 2. #4 Don
Thomson Jr. in the Home Hardware Chevrolet 3. #76 Al Turner in the Blue
Streak Intrepid.
