Subject: WKA: US-13 Kartway race report 2001-10-05
By Bruce Walls - Special to Motorsport.com

DELMAR, DE-Sussex County Delaware kart racers swept seven of nine
classes offered last Friday night (October 5th) at the US-13 Kart Club
"Trophy Race" in Delmar. Erika Hearn of Greenwood, DE and Seaford, DE based
Brittany Abbott each bagged wins that night.
Hearn earned Briggs Junior Sportsman-2 Heavy's pole and was only
slowed by two caution restarts on her way to a wire-to-wire win. Hearn
rocketed off the pole and was lapping traffic when the first caution waved.
She led the restart and built another comfortable lead when the caution flag
waved for a second time with just four laps left. When green flag racing
resumed Hearn hustled her new Phantom Nemesis kart into the lead again and
show the field across the finish line.
"The new kart worked very good and the Hayes Power motor was very
fast," credited the 12-year-old Bi Rite Auto/Seaford VFW sponsored winner.
Abbott and Milford, DE racer Courtney Lewis engaged in a heated
Briggs Stock Lite battle that saw Abbott narrowly beating Lewis to the
finish. Abbott earned the pole, but Lewis took the early led only to have it
canceled by the caution flag before the first lap was booked. Abbott led the
restart and fought off Lewis's challenges for several laps and opened a
small advantage over Lewis. One lap from mid-race the caution flag flew for
a second time. Abbott shot back into the lead and started to pull away from
Lewis putting a lapped kart between them. Lewis fought back and turned up
the heat on Abbott in the final laps, but Abbott prevailed across the
stripe.
"The Phantom kart handled very well and the Huffy Power motor was
pulling. I just stayed low in the corners and drove hard," explained the
Delaware Auto Exchange sponsored 15-year-old winner.
Piloting a 1994 Hayes Powered Trick kart, Josh Beattie of Laurel, DE
led Stock 5 Horsepower racers from start to finish. "The kart ran fine and
the HP motor was fast," he said.
Capitalizing on race leaders crashing ahead of him on the last lap
earned Delmar driver Kyle Dixon Briggs Junior Sportsman-1 Heavy's win. Brent
Sutton, Jr. of Bridgeville was first under the checkered flag, but the
11-year-old Sapp Powered Illusion kart pilot was disqualified for rough
driving as they headed for the final flag and Dixon was credited with the
win.
"The kart was perfect and you can't get much better than Robinson
Speed Shop for motors," said the 9-year-old winner. "I want to thank Cooper
Welding and Delmar Liquors for sponsoring me," he added.
Delmar, DE based Herman Powell posted Stock Extra Heavy's win. "The
Phantom kart handled fine and John Hurley's motor was fast," he credited.
Stock Heavy's checkered flag waved for Greenwood based Illusion kart
pilot Rob Toomey. "The kart handled pretty good and Kevin Coulbourn's motor
was running strong," said 22-year-old winner.
Bridgeville, DE based Taz Power Randy Wroten ruled Limited "pen's
final laps. "The Taz Powered motor was putting out some power and the
Phantom Stalker handled great," said Wroten.
J.R. White, of Salisbury, MD, captured Stock Heavy's lead with five
laps left and showed the field home from there. Keith Jones earned the pole
and led most of the laps as White reeled him in.
"The Outlaw kart was a little loosed at first and then tightened up
and got better at the end and Ron Trice's motor was built to a T, I couldn't
have asked for better," White said after his win.
US-13 Club Championship points racing resumes Friday night at US-13
Kartway. Gates open at 6 p.m. Club racing continues through October.
