For any folk unaware of the toxic group of hate mongers calling themselves
the Westboro Baptist Church, be aware that many of them are lawyers and much
of their income is from very successfully suing people who attack them.

Yes, quite correct & valid.
For quite a bit of time, I was the senior commander dealing
with many "protest" type gatherings.

Interestingly, I was able to find that the "Westboro" * group
was 'thorny' ** but not too bad. ***
They were quite internally self disciplined. They were intelligent
and informed enough.
So, the main problems were more, the "counter-protest"
citizens & groups that gathered.

* Let me be clear to the less informed,
although this group uses the word "Baptist" in their name,
no broader implications from that word, should be drawn.

** As to "thorny", yes, they were very well informed and
understanding about how far they could push their issues & points.
And VERY good at successfully pushing everyone's
"hot buttons".

*** As to "bad", they had rather despicable messages,
and posters, and inflamatory speech,
but, in the bottom line, I can not recall any case where
their followers, and my officers, fought or injured each other.

So, when I did my homework properly, and told them
"that is private property, the representative of the owner
does not want you there, and if any of your members enter it,
I will cause them to be arrested and booked. I have
considerable confidence they will be prosecuted and
I think will probably be convicted.
They understood.

And, this is totally opposite of my experiences with,
say animal rights groups.
They routinely had individuals get carried away & go violent.

The Westboro people are the same ones who protested at funerals of American soldiers because they were convinced we were all going to Hades for our complicity in allowing homosexuals to have rights. Or something. It's hard to get a grasp on these wingnuts.

Standing on the outside - practically all of your churches/religions are
extreme.
If you want an example of how we in UK view such people, take Tony
Blair. If we'd known the fucking idiot had taken to talking to Dog and
was desperate to convert to the popes gang - he would never have been
elected, yet along become prime minister.

You are obviously VERY much on the outside.
I think you overestimate what you see on TV.

The vast majority of our churches, and our ministers (etc.)
do not make the "news reports" and have no interest
in doing so.
Just as the 'newsmakers' in F1, are not the majority
of auto sport enthusiasts or participants, the churchs that
are 'newsmakers', are not the majority.
Not everyone who owns a race car should be considered
to be the same as Vijay Mallya.
The majority of US church views are pretty low key & not extreme.

Or do you consider the Church of England / Anglican
to be extreme?

And, again directly to your earlier post,

"Idiotic" ? Maybe in some things, sure (GRIN!), BUT not on this.

My sworn duty was to protect free speech.
I was being paid, to among other things, financially protect
my jurisdiction from ruinious lawsuits.
(Please, if you missed it earlier, do read "Sla#s" very valid post).
Also note, "WBC, through the closely related Phelps Chartered law firm,
has collected fees under the Civil Rights Attorney's Fees Award Act of
1976 when their protests have been unlawfully disrupted."

You deny it is protected "free speech", but since the SCOTUS
ruled 8 to 1 that it is, YOU ARE WRONG!
It is ugly, nasty, and rather despicable speech, but if a jurisdiction
fails to adequately protect it, Westboro can become enriched,
the the community becomes poorer.

They did several demonstrations in my area I had to work on.
One time it was 5 straight days. Tense work to keep the
'counter-protestors' from getting into fights when these
Westboro jerks are pushing every hot button they can.
Sure & sadly, some of our citizens could not see the forest
for the trees, and were angry at us for allowing, neigh even "protecting"
them. The community leaders understood, and spoke out supporting us.
It was quite tough, but satisfying, as they packed up to go to the
airport, and we stood down, confident that any lawsuit was unlikely.

Bottom line, if Westboro is there, it is easiest on the emotions
to just avoid them. You can not win an argument with them
to change their minds.
But,,,, some people like watching others take a stick and poke
at a hornet's nest,,,, so have fun!

(Hey, it takes special talent to get Bill O'Reilly, and Michael Moore,
and the KKK to all denounce you!)

A ridiculously absurd suggestion, such protests have been
ruled illegal within the close confines of a private funeral.

This "church" admitted last year that they have a total membership of about
40 which is tiny for any eccentric group in the USA. WTF are sites like
pitpass giving them free publicity and making them out to be something more
than they are?

The 8th Circuit decision was appealed to the Supreme Court and
was overturned in an 8-1 decision.

WBC tried something similar here - threatening to protest at the
funeral of a local Iraq veteran in 2006. They never showed,
claiming that they had somewhere else to be that day. I suspect
they were put off by the very negative local response and the
presence of the Patriot Guard riders.

Talent like that they can keep.

Check your dates there Einstein, the above ruling occurred
AFTER that of the below. Even if you hadn't read the article,
reading the URL alone might have provided the needed clue ;^).

Which conservative wing? The Evangelical conservative wing, or the
Anglo-Catholic conservative wing?

That's two separate extremes, rather than one.
