That's one thing I don't do. There's lots I don't do well yet, but
keeping my foot in it even on the rumble strips isn't a problem for me.

I'd say an improvement from around 1:52 to around 1:40 would be pretty
good, Michael (even if a portion of that could be attributed to using a
higher rev limit).

Another course: another course where I was never passed except by the
instructors (who you'd have to agree are likely to be pretty good given
that they have to be able to run with students of all abilities who
might occasionally do the wrong thing at the wrong time).

Just as it's a fact that one of the drivers who couldn't pass me was
Bryan Herta's son, who's only been racing for 6 years. He was more
comfortable running close up behind the instructor for the passing
exercises, I'll give him that!

Just as it's a fact that my two on-track instructors agreed that I
could actually have beaten one of the instructors they don't use for
on-track work... ...because he's not fast enough.

I was is that of my instructor, Thomas Merrill: F2000 champion and
rookie of the year a few years back, plus 24 Hours of Daytona driver.

It's not caught on video, but in my very last session, I pushed too hard
coming out of turn 4, put two wheels in the dirt, and then spun it into
the wall on the inside. A very expensive but ultimately useful lesson.

Just looking at the first video, it looked to me like you were having a
little bit of trouble judging your steering input for turn-ins. This
would make me ask how the car felt to you -- was it well-balanced and
neutral, or a tiny bit twitchy with oversteer?

It's great that you're enjoying the open-wheeler. I can tell you, from
my limited experience, that going to slicks is a huge step up in both
challenge and enjoyment -- something to look forward to.

And for all the critics, success at lower speeds, whether autocross or
lower formulas, is never an accurate predictor of success at any faster
formula. At some level of time compression, either you have the innate
ability, or you don't. Open and shut.

For myself, I ran out of ability (or balls, if you prefer) trying to
move up from FF on slicks. But I was older, and I'm glad I had the
experience.

The patches on drivers suits do more.

Everybody who wants to be a race car driver goes there.
In years past you could do work for them like being a corner worker or
track assistant and get seat time or a low paying job like being a
intern maybe closer to being a serf.

Also good if you not into racing there are different types of classes
and you get good instructors like Tom who find out after the driving
career goes now where they still need to work and being a driver
instructor is pretty easy if you can do it.

Skippy did well with that school it's base of operation moved to Road
Atlanta from lime rock when skippy sold it.

It is true sad but true.I have know Bruce since his days at Stimola in
the 70's I push new drivers to him.

Nancy Stimola had it for a while after Joe died but it was given back to
Bruce last year, it is starting to decompose.

There's the entire video from which I pulled the earlier one.

Note the driver's suit, note the helmet, note the radio taped to the
helmet so that he can talk to the other instructors, and note the logo
you can just see a little of on the top of the helmet at 6:20 and again
at about 8:53 (and note the name "Merrill" on the helmet and the suit
just earlier). The same logo as this site:

That's Thomas come over to talk to me about my off at turn 2 (put four
wheels off, you get to come in for a chat). Can you see the same logo as
the previous video? Can you see the guy in the white helmet (what you'd
expect from someone who only bought it in June) and can you see the blue
driving suit. Do I have to take a sign pic with those self-same bits of
gear to humiliate you further?

Yup. I said that. What I DIDN'T say was that Thomas had made any. I know

Think he is getting tired, it is a lot of work. To gather funding and
stay in shape to survive a 24 race.
