I played Project Gotham on the old Xbox on a big screen TV and it was
awesome. the new one with supercars like the Diablo, McLaren F1 and
others looks incredible. I read a few reviews and gamers just raved.

Consoles and racing games don't mix, IME. Gran Turismo vs. Grand Prix
Legends... no question, GPL wins, especially with the latest round of
patches and new cars (with rev counters you can read the numbers off,
fantastic). Halo, on the other hand - now that was a great game.

Astraman is right in saying the PS3 has an even hotter graphics CPU.
This MSFT & Sony battle is advancing the games which is good for
gamers. Laz is right that they are only games. I generally avoid them
because they are addictive and a waste of time. Still, the graphincs
are amazing and it is exciting watching how good them games look now.
The whole thing is a bit like F1, the end result or product is not that
great but the technology is impressive.

Oh here we go. The Xbox was (is) better than the PS2. More grunt, memory
and better graphics. I ran a development company and can promise you
that we had to downgrade our game for the Xbox so that we could develop
just the one game for those two platforms. This notwithstanding a French
Lead Graphics and PS2 programmer (and worshipper) who hated to admit it.
Worse for Sony - MS have beaten Sony to the next generation and if
history is to be repeated, Sony will promise more and again deliver late
- and *then* only in Japan with 3 games. Worse still the development API
will be non existent, the hardware cryptic to work with and all the
while DirectX is _right there_ from day one on the new Xbox.

Which box - the one you're reading this on, or the Xbox...?

People may hate Bill Gates but he is throwing money at the Xbox and
making it a real priority.
Interesting. I just read a tech head-to-head which ran the two consoles
pretty close :
http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-x-1985-x-x-x
Nonetheless, the Sony looks stronger to me, and the
backwards-compatibility with the PS2 has got to be the clincher,
surely? Sony "made" this console space with the Playstation range, and
they still have huge public mindshare compared to MS, don't you think?
If I were to buy one, it'd be the PS3, not least in order for my son to
still exploit the vast library of PS2 games he and his friends have
accumulated. The X-Box is nowhere to be seen around here. None of the
kids I know have one.
Also, I read a fascinating article some time ago about the Cell chip
concept, and the future directions it might take. It looked pretty
awesome actually. I think it was on arstechnica.com.
Oh, and the X-box is UGLIER :-)

My housemate has a PS2 and an XBox and I think the XBox has the better
controller (sadly though, only one of them, which IMO seriously limits
its usefulness, but since he's broke, no chance of a change their).
Graphics-wise there's not a whole lot to choose, especially since they
both have to put up with our TV, which is crap. I would probably choose
between the new ones on the basis of what games are available rather
than the spec of the consoles, if I were a console buying type person.

The Xbox 360 basic and advanced "ain't" cheap. Supposedly, MSFT is
losing about $160 on each one they sell. My guess is this is a battle
to the death between Sony & MSFT for the video game business.
I am not sure what internet and other integration features both boxes
have. I thought the XBox has wireless technology.
The early end user reports are that the 360 has some serious
bugs. Some are wondering if a recall might be necessary.
I went to Target department store tonight and kids were playing on a
360 machine. They were playing a WW2 war game. The graphics were very
good,
It looked like they had at least three in stock. I think Microsoft was
trying to make it look like their was a shortage and huge demand. If
Target had three in stock then the demand is not that great.
I did not ask the price but I bet it is not cheap.

Hmmm, when the Japanese do this with chips it's called dumping and is
illegal.
How does Bill get away with it?

I am not sure of the loss is based on just the production cost to put
an XBox 360 together (components & labor) or adding that plus all the
marketing hype or all of that plus the development costs???.
I would also bet the software developers are getting extra money to
write games for it.
What? He's dead?

I think the difference is that with chips, that's all you're selling,
whereas if Microsoft can demonstrate a genuine business model based on
sales of games and accessories, then they're just doing what the printer
manufacturers do - sell you the device at less than cost, then take the
coat off your back for the consumables. Perfectly normal...

Except the MS business model for the XBox is more along the lines of:
Create and control home entertainment system market for playing of
games, .wma DRM crippled music, DRM crippled videos etc. Once control
has been asserted, monopolise. MS make most of their money off Office,
Windows contributes, most of the rest of the products sell off the back
of that enabling a controlled environment to protect the OS/Office monopoly.

No no, keep it on, you're spot on...
Hmmm, I thought I'd been reading too much /. ;)
Personally, I don't believe the supposed EBoM. They're rarely accurate,
almost always being overestimates (c.f. the recent iPod EBoM 'scandal'.)
