Lawrence is inferring that as Dubai has deferred US$26b of debt that
Abu Dhabi is in financial trouble so has cancelled an historic event

The above should read "Dubai World" not Dubai.
For those who don't know, "Dubai World" is a govt owned co developing
another of those luxury island developments.

Certainly not because of a financial crisis. Abu Dhabi is massively
wealthy. Their neighbour Dubai has sneezed and not a big sneeze that
and that does not mean Abu Dhabi will catch a cold.
If Mexico has financial problems it does not mean the US is in crisis,
that's what Lawrence is suggesting, it is ludicrous.

Noj,

however it is too far off topic for this discussion so I'd suggest you
do a google for "limited liability company"

Correct. DWC debt holders just imagined (hoped) it was sovereign debt.
G'day News,
yeah, pretty much as you say but the banks PR dept would word it
something like "Dubai Worlds debt structure would reflect on the State
of Dubai", lol. Same old ...
I think the most nervous of the banks will be the smaller ones like
RBS as the bulk of the debts are to Arab banks so their voting power
is at the mercy of those bigger Arab banks, not a good thing. That
said, according to Shaws Abu Dhabi threw US$10b a few days ago and
another US$10b is on it's way so the banks are probably heaving a sigh
of relief.
For those who do not know "Dubai" and "Abu Dhabi" are separate states.
Dubai's income is mostly finance, property, development, etc only a
small portion is energy. Abu Dhabi on the other hand is one of the
worlds largest oil producers. So in summary Dubai is a "Vegas" of the
east and reliant on foreign income which is still considerable. Abu
Dhabi has a license to print oil money and is not in danger of a
financial crisis.

I don't see that he's dissembling. He's just arguing that the
cancelling of a particular race in Abu Dhabi is not motivated by a
financial crisis.
The Yas Marina circuit is still publicising the Oz V8 event in
February. If they're in such pooh then why is that one going ahead?
The classic race at Yas Marina was to be a joint venture between the
circuit and Masters Historic Racing. Earlier this year MRH pulled out
of an event at the Nurburgring.
What Lawrence doesn't tell (and I wonder if he knows) is WHO pulled
the plug on the event. It wasn't necessarily the circuit owners. He
also doesn't say WHY. He surmises that. MRH pulled out of the meeting
at the 'Ring because of differences over what they call "Event
Content".
What Lawrence is doing here embodies a classic logical fallacy -
affirming the consequent. Say we have a plane, the Bobliner. Say that
it is known that at 500mph the Bobliner becomes unstable. That does
not mean that if a Bobliner crashes it must have exceeded 500mph.
There are other possibilities, and it's wrong to exclude them.
G'day Bob ... others,
It was MHR that canceled the event. What I can tell you is that MHR
canceled the event and notified the entrants on the 25th Nov not the
2nd of Dec as Lawrence wrote so he has one fact wrong. Also the
entrant who passed that info has said he wonders how many more will be
canceled in 2010 and was surprised more were not canceled on 2009.
Read what you will into those comments.
What confounds me is that Lawrence knows the article is waffle and
will be shown to be such yet he published it. Does he think all the
readers are idiots?
beers,
build
Well you desert countries have to stick together ;-)
I hear you're exporting camels back to the arab nations now, probably
sending coal to Newcastle next!
He was asked a direct question.
"Care to explain why the Classic race has been cancelled?"
He wriggles like Brendan but is afraid to actually admit that he can't
answer the question.
Very Brenda-like.

Um sorry, but if you claim to understand Dubai or Abu Dhabi financial
structures then, like quantum physics, you don't.
I've been listening to a lot of very clever people trying to explain who
owns what and who is responsible for what, and with out exception every
credible debate or conversation that I have heard has ended with, "but to be
honest, we don't actually know". Every one is in "best guess" mode. No one
understands it, which is why people are worrying.
AC
Yes.
AC
To be fair, it's really an opinion piece, as most of Lawrence's are.
At least I hope it's an opinion piece. Even then it seems that he's
playing a bit fast and loose with the facts and the conclusions that
he draws, but it would be a whole lot worse if it Pitpass want it to
be regarded as expert analysis or actual reportage.
He is using in it that vile British class way. Anything that is considered
beneath "one" is now called "chav". The use of the word "chav" now says more
about the snobbish arrogant ignorance of the person saying it than the
subject of the attack.
In this way, one could describe that article as "chav". It hits the lowest
common denominator and is purely designed to sensationalize the issues.
Lawrence writes like he is writing a long version of a Sun story.
AC
Can you? Other than by repeating Lawrence's less than watertight
version of events?
IIRC Build has also posted more information on this cancellation
elsewhere in the thread, saying that it was, in fact, MRH who pulled
How's the view from up there, AC?

Don't touch me unless you love me.
From whence the term "chav", anyway?
I understand it's English slang, but what is its origin?
The OED's earliest reference for "chav" is from uk.local.kent on
08/05/1998:
"Travelling from Maidstone to Chatham every day was bad enough. I
was born in Brompton so am I a Chav or what?"
Wikipedia references this:
http://www.worldwidewords.org/topicalwords/tw-cha2.htm
and others to suggest that it's derived from Romani where one word for
"child" is "chavi".
Then they have suspected backronyms like "Council House And Violent" or
"CHeltenham AVerage".
I first noticed it applied to relatively young guys who insisted on
wearing Burberry accessories and who hung around in small gangs being
annoying in the late '90s..
We'll probably never know for sure where it really originated.
Ta.
Oddly, I had considered it might be an acronym, and, believe it or not,
had thought of "Commission Housing" but could come up with nothing for the
"-av" part.

http://therhonddarover.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/chav.jpg
No I can't. But then, no-one has asked me until you did, and I have
answered truthfully, which is more than can be said for build.
> IIRC Build has also posted more information on this cancellation
> elsewhere in the thread, saying that it was, in fact, MRH who pulled
> the plug on the event.
Yeah, right, and that is still disputed, and he still hasn't answered
the question.
--
Paul-B
Disputed? He's given more of an explanation than Lawrence has.
Lawrence is just saying that the event's off and that it MUST be Abu
Dhabi that's pulled the plug and it MUST be a financial crisis. Build
certainly hasn't offered anything less probable than that.
Oh for crying out loud, how many Times?
HE HASN'T ANSWERED THE QUESTION!
--
Paul-B
Let's take this from the top....
Build writes:
>>>Lawrence is inferring that as Dubai has deferred US$26b of debt that
>>>Abu Dhabi is in financial trouble so has cancelled an historic event
>>>at Yas Marina. Does that make any sense?
So Noj comes out with:
>> Care to explain why the Classic race has been cancelled?
See what's going on here? Build has poked a reasonable, plausible hole
into a superficially impressive but flawed rant from Lawrence. He's
said the article is bollocks (I agree). He hasn't pretended to know
the whole truth of the matter.
But it's not good enough for Noj. Nor, I think, for you. Presumably
it's enough to say that bollocks is bollocks and this is why it's
bollocks. It is required to show the truth that Lawrence himself
seemingly cannot.
Anyhoo, Build actually gives an answer to the question:
>Certainly not because of a financial crisis. Abu Dhabi is massively
>wealthy. Their neighbour Dubai has sneezed and not a big sneeze that
>and that does not mean Abu Dhabi will catch a cold.
>
>If Mexico has financial problems it does not mean the US is in crisis,
>that's what Lawrence is suggesting, it is ludicrous.
So he hasn't dodged the question. He responded to it. I think it's
reasonable.
But OK... let's accept your version of events, namely that "HE HASN'T
ANSWERED THE QUESTION!" and move on to some more straight questions
and see what answers are forthcoming.
1) You posted (and I quote) "You're as good at dissembling as Brenda.
Must be an Australian thing." Now putting aside that if Brendon took a
similar tilt at the British you'd be calling him a racist, where
exactly has Build dissembled?
2) Elsewhere in this thread Build posted that "G'day Bob ... others,
It was MHR that canceled the event" etc etc. I pointed this out to
you. You replied "Yeah, right, and that is still disputed,". OK... so
looking at the thread in Google Groups there is exactly one reply to
that post from Build and it is a very short one. It reads "yes".
That's it. The entirety of the single reply. So where is the disputing
of Build's version of events?
3) I asked if you knew why the Abu Dhabi Classic had been cancelled.
You replied "No I can't. But then, no-one has asked me until you did,
and I have
answered truthfully, which is more than can be said for build. " Now
let's not beat around the bush any more, you are saying that Build has
not answered truthfully. Which is interesting, because if he hasn't
answered at all, which was your earlier assertion, then how can he
have answered untruthfully? But never mind that, where is untruth from
Build? Can you quote it?
I think we know what sort of answers we're going to be getting here.
Build hasn't dissembled, hasn't been untruthful and his version of
events is not disputed.
What seems to have stirred things up here is that he's looked at
Lawrence's rant (and that's what it is), found that it doesn't make a
lot of sense and has said so.
Is that so bad?
> To be fair, it's really an opinion piece, as most of Lawrence's are.
> At least I hope it's an opinion piece. Even then it seems that he's
> playing a bit fast and loose with the facts and the conclusions that
> he draws, but it would be a whole lot worse if it Pitpass want it to

I e-mailed Pitpass, asking them in what light Mike Lawrence's articles
should be considered. The gist of their reply was that the piece we
are discussing here is to be considered as Mike Lawrence's opinion.
Fantastic.
Luckily, way above even me, there are far smarter people than me whom I can
rely on for better information than random Usenet posters.
Note how it is very clearly implied that I don't know jack shit about the
finances of these places either. I am happy to admit that I don't know
something or concede when I am wrong. A humility that is sadly lacking from
most.
So I ask you, how is your view, from a position clearly far higher than
mine? Must be incredibly comfortable sitting on that sofa of pure, perfect
knowledge, knowing that merely dismissing people is far easier than
admitting to error.
AC
Just for the sake of it, that my understanding(ish) of the word too.
I had a colleague who lived in Maidstone who first used the word to me, and
pointed me to an "are you a chav" type website. This was something like 9/10
years ago, before I ever heard the word was used in the media.
Interestingly the only explanation he had for the word was that it was
simply a shortened form of Chatham, "Cha", with a "v" just bunged on the
end. He reckoned that the other explanations were from media types trying to
over intellectualize the term. Given where the word came from I find this
explanation to be the most likely.
:) Oops. Might be being a bit hypocritical there.......... Coat time.

Which he doesn't want.

Perhaps the above came out differently than it was intended, if so
ignore the following. I think you are trying to words into a post that
were not there. I never claimed any such thing. And, as you do not
know what my knowledge of financial structures is, posting "you don't"

G'day Paul,
What question was that? Sorry I've got a short memory.
Does it refer to the email sent to entrants on the 25th of November
that Lawrence claims was sent on the 2nd of December?
or
Was it in reference to Lawrence's accusation that one of the richest
nations on earth is going broke?
or did you want to know the *real* reason why the Classic was
canceled? I can now tell you if you are *really* interested or do you
already know?
beers,
build
I'm quite happy to continue the main debate, except that I know very
little about the governance or the financial status of either Dubai or
Abu Dhabi. However "certainly not because of a financial crisis" does
not answer the starightforward question Noj put to build, which I'll
remind you was "Care to explain why the Classic race has been
cancelled?".
If build does not know the answer the very least he can do is to say
so, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that because, time after
time, you've shown yourself as being incapable of answering a straight
question honestly. Something most posters here are well aware of.

The question, as you are well aware, was "Care to explain why the
Classic race has been cancelled?"
Yes, I would like to know the real reason why the Classic race was
cancelled... if I knew it I wouldn't be asking. So please do tell... if
you know I would have expected an answer to Noj's question when it was
first posted, would have saved a lot of keyboard wear.

Paul-B
Yeah OK, I've done playing and note, I only got the answer last night
but the answer I gave was sufficient in response to Lawrence which is
the subject of the thread.
The Classic has been postponed. They’re reorganizing the schedule so
they can commission some of the other facilities – mainly the Drag
Centre and the Driving Academy. The Classic will happen, but later. An
annual classic event remains a part of their development plans.
That's the official PR but my mate who told me that says despite the
handsome funding the entrants were unable to prepare the cars before
christmas for shipping so Yas Marina were happy to utilise the time
for said works giving them a nice excuse for being disorganized.
So it has nothing to do with any external issues in Dubai or anywhere
else.

Not so. Now we need to discuss who got suckered into confusing
Lawrence's rant with real life.
It's much more real life than anything posted in rasf1. And, like him
or loathe him, I'm sure Lawrence has a lot more inside info about F1
than anyone here does.
--
Paul-B
> It's much more real life than anything posted in rasf1. And, like him
> or loathe him, I'm sure Lawrence has a lot more inside info about F1

I'm not so sure after this latest effort. He added 2 and 1.5 together
and came up with a pretty large number. Either he doesn't know half as
much as he acts like he does, or he was just looking to have a toffee-
nosed rant at the new money in F1 and dealt with the subset of the
truth that supported that.
Best to regard it as an opinion piece rather than reportage or expert
analysis.
That's what it is, and it doesn't purport to be anything other than his
own opinion.
--
Paul-B
I'm not so sure.
Pitpass's position is that it's a feature, written in the first person
thus opinion. I think the piece pushes the boundaries of that
definition. Lawrence presents us with a narrative, and as with all
narratives it's from the narrator's view point. He's not using terms
like "My reading of this situation is..." or "It seems to me that..."
He's being emphatic - telling us what happened and why.
But OK... let's accept that it's Mr Lawrence's opinion and he just
wants to put out some thoughts, give us something to contemplate and
discuss.
But perhaps of more relevance here is what WE make of this piece. It
was the chronologically (as per google groups) 27th post in this
thread that raised the possibility that the piece under discussion
might be an opinion piece. There's very little discussion of this, and
nobody actually says anything like "Well it's just his opinion, it's
not gospel and not intended to be."
If it's opinion, and we accept it as opinion, then fine... consider
it. Like it. Don't like it. No skin off of anybody's nose.
If somebody expects me to believe that this is more weighty than the
opinion of the common man because MIKE LAWRENCE wrote it then I say
his argument is fair game fair game and I can examine it, see if there
are flaws in it (I'll save you the time, there are) and if it looks
like bollocks (I'll save you the time, it does) then I can say so
(I'll save you the time, I did).
If somebody expects me to believe that this is actual expert analysis
or reportage then I'm equally entitled to throw some mud and see what
sticks. I do make some exception for expertise - there are many things
on which I am not expert and others are - but in this particular case
the logic is fundamentally flawed and Lawrence, unless he's some kind
of economist, is arguing outside of his area of expertise anyway.
Yeah. Sorry, AC. Did seem a bit harsh when I read it on the screen.
