Actually this one is interesting. Autosport magazine contacted almost all living F1
drivers and asked them for their all-time (since 1950) top 10. 217 of them responded
and this is the result - no driver could vote for themselves and points were

Interesting that 8 current (2009) drivers are rated in the top 80 or so
of all time. Recent memories are stronger I guess.

Does Schumacher have lots of incriminating photographs of other drivers, or
something?

It's difficult enough to compare drivers of the *same* generation, let
alone those of different generations and I suspect that guys who have
actually driven in F1 tend to be more subjective than most i.e. if
another guy has regularly beaten you you might well place him higher
in the order than his talent actually justified.
An amusing exercise for the holiday period perhaps but not to be
taken seriously.

More contemporaries of Button and Hamilton are in a position to vote
than those of Moss and Collins, unfortunately.

I heard Jack Brabham interviewed on the radio today, on the 50th anniversary
of his first WDC win. He voted for Moss as #1. (but also said he only felt
qualified to rate those he drove against.)

Sir Jack has said before that the best driver he ever raced against
was Moss. He said that Clark was fantastic in a car that could win but
Moss was fantastic in any car any time.

I hate these things. I always want to know who guys like Maurice
Trintignant are, and why Vitantonio Liuzzi isn't as good!

It drives me crazy!

Very true. Moss could and did drive anything, I seem to remember he
even did some rally driving (and of course his sister, Pat, was one
of the top female rally drivers)

Anybody who saw Jimmy Clark in a Lotus Cortina will know that it
wasn't only F1 cars that he was quick in but most of his winning was
certainly done in a Lotus single-seater.

It was supposed to be a hairpin, but in '61 he advised it to be a twin corner
instead and his instructions were followed!

He won the first race there as well, in his 2.5 litre Coventry Climax-powered
Lotus 19.

If only I wasn't 2 at the time! I would have been there! I swear!

I got a kick out of a David Letterman episode from a while back.

Dave is at his best when he's interviewing racers. (His interview with Nige
in '93 was a classic).

He interviewd Moss, following the sport car classic weekend in California, I
think they were at Laguna Seca. Dave had 80 something year-old Moss on the
seat and said "I want to show this to you"

He proceded to show how Stirling was driving a classic Silver Arrow Merc worth
about $1 million or so, not owned by him, and in a 'gentleman's race' HE WENT
RED MIST and took out 3 cars, cutting a hair pin!

He was driving with an attitude like he did back in his prime.

Dave asked him "What made you do that?" "With some other guy's $1 million
car?"

And Moss just said something like 'it's not my car anymore' 'I felt like
going for it!'

I think Sir Jack was talking about attitude rather than versatility
(which Clark certainly had). The suggestion, I think, is that Clark
was only motivated in a car that could win and with which he could
control the race from the front.

If that were so, you would expect wee Jimmy to have finished sixth a few
times, would you not? In reality, if he did not win, it was because he had
posted a dnf.
For verification of what he was capable of, even if he was not leading from
the start and controlling the race, study the Italian GP of 1967.

Or the German GP, 1962 was it, when he forgot to turn the fuel pumps
on and was left on the grid. Finished 4th IIRC.

No - but he does have lots of trophies.
And the reasons for them - and this - aren't what you believe them to be.

I've read Sir Jack saying similar things about Moss and Clark before.
I'm not sure I entirely agree with him. One of the things that needs
to be remembered about Clark is that he drove for Lotus, thus got a
lot of fast but fragile cars.
