According to pitpiss -

http://www.pitpass.com/48524-Ecclestone-in-Melbourne-snub

the Dwarf is attempting to sell F1 to Melbourne by claiming -
"...This is the biggest free-to-air television event around the world
that promotes Melbourne..."

Didn't I recently read that Aussies have to pay to watch F1?

And it isn't shown live or complete free-to-air in the UK.

A reading of that report suggests that it was Walker what said that,
yer Honour.

I don't know, but I rather suspect that the GP is at least as "free to
air" as the Tennis.

Walker's arithmetic is not great. 50 million AUD a year IS 1.5 billion
for 30 years. If there is no annual escalation for the GP. Which there
will be.

And most of the F1 races broadcast in the U.S. will be on cable TV, not
free.

But is it in Brazil, which is a far bigger audience than the UK.

Nope. Free to air on Ten/One, depending on the race. I wish it was on pay
tv if it meant no adverts every 5 laps.

But NBC-Sports Network is basic-cable for most cable and sattelite systems.
So most people will get it without paying extra. Same level of service that
SpeedTV was on.

Curious to see how the new commentator(s) stack up. They brought back
Matchett and Hobbs and will use Leigh Diffy as the main talking head. From
the lineup this weekend, we're still getting Friday's practice, qualifying
and the race all live, with rebroadcast of the practice and qualifying just
before the race on Sunday.

Actually, it looks like we're getting Practice 1, delayed, and Practice
2, live, if I read the schedule right.

And just as free, that is to say not.

And the same guy in the pitlane, if the F1 Countdown show is any indication.

Speed didn't broadcast P1 at all, although they did stream both P1 and P3.

For many and many years SpeedTV was on an upper tier on cable systems.
When I got DirecTV about ten years ago or so (I did it just to watch F1 on
SpeedTV) I did receive SpeedTV on the basic tier. But I'm not sure they
kept it in the basic tier and I might have been grandfathered in. It
doesn't matter now though. SpeedTV is turning into another probably useless
network.

But I know how many of you feel about the Sky thing. There are some
networks I would like to check out on DirecTV but I would have to subscribe
to an additional package and it's just not worth it.

I just read yesterday that SpeedTV will be rebranded as 'Fox Sports 1' this
fall, (just like how Versus because NBCSN).
