People are missing the point. Even the OP. Lewis didn't leave McLaren
for Merc for performance reasons. It was personal, growing up, growing
out, commercial, management, image, whatever. Never was performance
given as a reason. So, the relative performance of the two teams is
irrelevant.
Nice for Lewis that he can look back a McLaren and say, "phew", but
that's just icing on the cake.
