Stuff sent into 5 Live F1 during the practice seems hardly checked
before read out as fact;

e.g. "At all times has a past, present or future UK champ been in F1
since 1952".

So, Damon Hill left at the end of 1999, and Jenson Button began at the
start of 2000 - etc.

But;

James Hunt left after the 1979 Monaco GP, so only a few races in,
Nigel Mansell didn't start until 1980 - and was not in those first
1980 races either I seem to remember.

John Watson was in it then, but was never actually champ, Stewart had
long retired, Damon Hill not in it either by 1980.

So, wrong.

I don't quite follow you. The claim was that a year hadn't passed
without a British Champ taking part. Which year are you saying was
completely without a Champ? (Note, I don't have an opinion, not knowing
that sort of trivia!)

What the viewer/listener said/wrote was that there had been a British F1 champion,
in every season since 1952, which is correct.
