NR2003 Nascar Racing

Hi,

Being an Australian living in Australia, I haven't had much (if any)
exposure to Nascar racing. The only time I think it gets mentioned
publically is when Marcos Ambrose (from Australian V8 Supercars fame)
does something in the Busch series. I think the assumption by most of
us here tends to be that it's got to be easy 'cause you're just racing
in a circle the whole time. I have recently been playing NR2003 and I
have to say that I'm quite impressed, not just with the game, but with
how much skill it takes to drive a Nascar car properly on each of the
tracks. I thought (not knowing anything about Nascar) that all the
tracks were the same, but having played the game I can see they are
very, very different. It wouldn't be so difficult if you were driving
on the track alone the whole time, but overtaking other cars provides
a great challenge especially in long races. It's amazing how tight
some of the tracks are - I can amagine these would be great tracks to
watch as a spectator in real life, as you would see everything that
happens. Unfortunately, we don't get Nascar on our free to air TV so I
haven't seen any real races. One day I might get Pay TV (cable) so
I'll see some for sure then.

The Speed Channel over here has too much Nascar and not enough Euro
series, IMO. They talk a lot about old American muscle cars too, big dumb
cars with big engines.

N3 has a big following in the states. Even though it's 4 years old it's
considered by many the best nascar sim. As you mentioned, it does take a
lot of practice on each track to pass other cars without crashing. It is
well documented that some of the real nascar drivers (i.e. dale earnhardt
jr) practice with Nascar 2003.

Nascar is interesting, but more types of racing would be welcome on
Speed. What happened to the FIA Rallye coverage? These were fun to
watch. Now, we have: NASCAR: inside; Nascar Victory Lane, Nascar
technology; Nascar this, Nascar that; all those shows about pimping cars
(is that the correct english term?) and of course, Pinks. Blah. I'd
rather see one of those V8 Supercaaaars (aussi pronouciation?) race once
in a while than those shows.

Marcos has been very well recieved over here and will, no doubt, be driving
in the Cup Series very soon. He really excels on the road courses and is
learning the ovals very quickly. He and Montoya are competing for rookie of
the year in Busch and Ambrose will probably not win it, but he is by far
more popular with the fans. I like his 'laid-back' attitude that reflects
very well on those living Down Under....:-). NR2003 is really THE sim for
Nascar today. Dale Jr, Hamlin and several other drivers recently began their
own racing server, but I forget the actual name of the site right now (maybe
BDR or something like that). Many of the drivers use it for actual practice
for learning to "hit their marks" on the real tracks. Setups etc. have
changed so much since the release of NR2003 that they are not very realistic
in todays' cars as they were 5yrs ago. The COT mods out now may work out if
the setup/aero parameters were modified to be more realistic for today's
cars. If they can get that right, NR2003 will still have a few years left in
it.

I miss that really, really long desert rally race. I forget the name of it
now. The one where drivers are shot at by bandits and stuff.

They do have other coverages like F1, F2, ALMS and some SCCA events. I guess
you have to wade through some of the garbage though. I do miss the V8
Supercar series.......but isn't that usually covered during 'our' winter
time? I think the FIA Rallye went to another channel......"VS" maybe?
Although I am a Nascar (actually a "motorsports") fan, there does come a
time when their coverage of Nascar goes way over the top.
