First rule of computers: If it works, don't fix it. only superceded by:
if there's an update available online that your software says is
available *never* download it.
I've lost count of the number of updates I've heard about where someone
was informed by a startup entry that only fouled things up. anti-malware
data files aside.

I had to update the nv drivers in order to run NFS Shift, but as I'm
more or less done with that title (anybody care for a used copy?), I
may as well go back to an older version as I've been experiencing
texture corruptions in rF every once in a while too (usually during
league races, of course ;-)

I just mentioned my card in case he asked.

I guess I'll dowgrade to that version, too. Did you run any utility
like nvcleaner or did you just re-install the 186.x series?

Ok, here's a little report: First time ever I used the nvidia
uninstaller to remove the 195 drivers. Little did I know that it would
remove the *chipset* drivers of my m2n-e sli mobo too 8-P
At least that's what appeared to be the case after the reboot, the NIC
would refuse to work and so on which is kinda bad because I had the
old drivers on an smb based network share.
After some fiddling with an sd card, a newer version of the chipset
drivers and some reconfiguration of the nic I was ready to install
v186 again, so far everything is looking good.
rF appears to work fine, too, but as those texture crashes were few
and far in between, only happened online on a single server and only
running the BT52 mod at certain tracks (Kya 2005, Donington GP), I
guess a final verdict will have to wait a little longer ;-)
Passed on NFS shift to my son in the process too as the game won't
work with that driver version... *shrug*
Cheers Uwe
Texture crashes are a common sympton of a hardware failure on any recent
nVidia card. NVidia has had an issue with chip bump designs and
materials, and I've had a 7900GT and a 8800GT fail on me during the last
2.5 years.
