OT: Speed Limits in USA

ago. We were amazed that once we got out of Texas, people really started
obeying the speed limits on the interstate. Virginia was especially fanatic
about it. Once we were on I-81, we could set our cruise control (obviously
we were not in a beetle) at 1 mile over the speed limit and pass most of the
cars on the road. I mean VA had "aircraft enforced speed limit" signs and
they have banned radar detectors in their state! On the way back, we could
have told without a map that we were nearing Texas again because 50% of the
people started ignoring the speed limit again. That jumped to about 75%
once we crossed the border.
So I was wondering..... is this a Texas thing? Here it seems like it is us
against the speed traps, and there really aren't that many of those
considering the size of the state. Speed limits are more of a "challenge
and suggestion". Police generally do not pull you over around where I live
unless you are going at least 10 miles over the limit. I was surprised that
this wasn't uniform throughout the country. (FYI: I didn't grow up in this
country and once in a while I get a little dose of "this is what it is like
in America").

texas! LOL In Alaska most people drive 10 mph over the posted 65 and about
10% drive 15 mph over at 80. There ARE things to hit in Alaska though. Like
moose! Let me tell you, when you hit a moose, even in a full size truck, the
moose may be killed but the truck usually is DOA too! Don't have a whole
lot of roads up here and everyone knows where the speed traps are, so speed
along and slow down for this section then speed back up....

haired gang" in tour busses. Even those San Fran to Tahoe buses cruise at
about 75. Scary when you are along side them in a propane powered Chevy

some reason on that road, people usually go 40 in the posted 45.
People also tend to not speed very much on the 70 mph interstates. I
set my cruise at 80 and passed every car on the road yesterday.

I followed a Vette going from Tahoe to San Fran last month. We did 90 at
times. Needless to say, it was a very quick trip!

I take Central Expwy (US 75) between Dallas and McKinney to and from work,
and 80 is very normal. If you drive the speed limit (65) you will start to
back up traffic and actually become a hazard!. But believe me, the Texas DPS
does write a lot of tickets. I have been ticketed too many times to count,
and the majority have been for speeding.

even those guys speed on our roads. Most, when I'm behind them have their
cruise set at 73 on the 65 mph roads. I been behind one several times that
sets his at 76. Like you said Randy looks like they give you 8-10 mph over
the limit. I've also noticed that when they do work the speed traps, it's
always in the other lanes, the ones without the heavy load of traffic going
75+. Speaking of hitting a moose, I sorta did that once. I hit a moose that
had just been hit by another oncoming vehicle. This guy smacked that moose
that came up out the ditch from no where and glass and body parts (vehicle)
were flying everywhere. The moose was down and spinning around in the middle
of the road and before I could react and brake thump, thump, thump, thump I
drove over her 4 legs. What really amazed me was how quickly this happened
in slow motion, one second everything is fine, the next there's one totaled
Buick, a dead moose and me needing to change my under wear.

the State Police (DPS) here in Texas, when you get pulled over by one,
if he writes you a ticket, most likely it will be only for what he
pulled you over for. My wife and I were driving back from California
in a car we had just bought from a friend of mine. We were on I-20
somewhere between Midland and Ft. Worth (and that is a long drive,
just to give you an idea, know why Midland is called Midland? When
the railroad was being built, that was the spot halfway between DFW
and El Paso, which is approximately 620 miles!) Got pulled over for
going 81mph. We explained we had just bought the car, it still had
California plates, we had no proof of registration, no proof of
insurance of any kind, and all I got was a ticket for speeding. If I
have to be pulled over in Texas, I prefer it to be by the DPS. I
severely dislike dealing with local cops, they are usually out just
for the municipal revenue they can generate.

Assembly failed to pass the last bill to raise the limits to 70. I guess
the insurance lobby pays them pretty well.
As for ticketing, I just got one for being 19 miles over. State police
run in unmarked cars that range from the plain jane Crown Vics to
Camaros and Ford Rangers painted to look like Dept. of Transportation.
They also have a few Cessna 182's they use to get you from the air.

My first speeding ticket ever (and only my second time being pulled
over) was for 95 MPH in a 45. However, it wasn't a 45, it was a 55
(NHP trooper wrote the tickit for where he had me pulled over, not
where he caught me speeding)and I still don't think I was going 95 (I
was in a well abused 4 cyl Fiero).
Ended up being a $1000 fine (thats right, three zeros).
Since then I have had tickets for:
50 in a 35
70 in a 55
83 in a 70
70 in a 55 construction zone
85 in a 75
70 in a 35 (the only one in a bug, and on federal land)
running a red light (I didn't come to a full stop before making a
right on red)
and warnings in Nevada, Texas and Indiana.
All this, and my first ticket was in '94.

ordered by the judge to go to traffic school. I was later told by other FHP
troopers that Judge Skidmore (skidmark, is more like it) thinks that FHP
Troopers "walk on water" and do no wrong....
So, if you are driving I-75, slow down in Sumpter County, or don't stop at
all!

Probably varies by state, though I think most to all have a similar
system. I know Michigan does.

able to access and acknowledge (even add up) charges/points/violations from
other states to count against you. For example, to what I remember,
Michigan had a "point" system (12 points and you were supposedly out), while
Illinois had "number of moving violations" (3, I think) in a given time
period. Time between incidents is also a factor, like a speeding ticket you
received 20 years ago has no bearing towards your current count.
Montana and some western states also issued speeding tickets that did not
count against your license (points or violations), they simply collected
fines on each offense.

We have almost the same system here in Nevada, but you can go to
driving school (4 hours long... or a simple mail in test... guess
which I do) to get the points waved.... they show in the record that
you recieved a "parking ticket" after completion of the course. Also,
if you tell the court that you will do traffic school, they usually
cut the fine in half.

I still have the *endorsement* on an Engelander licence from running at 135mph
on M5 (at least I think it was at the time, 1979) to Bristol in a Daimler
Double Six.
A new stretch of highway has just opened about 2.5 miles from my present *home*
in Raleigh, NC. It is a very convenient *test road*, at least before traffic
volume increases at the end of summer.
I have already topped 85 mph in my Ghia(checking high speed fuel mixture!) and
run to 125mph in a 89 Benz(checking wheel balance?!!). But always have to be on
the lookout for State Troopers in unmarked cars and SUVs.

Up to 15kmh over the limit is a tiny! $140, and it goes up from there. Try
doing more than 40kmh over the limit and it's about $500 and goodbye licence
for a year, then P plates for another year after that.
Not too many people speed here (only those who can afford NOT to ask the price
of a Rolls Royce).
Funnily enough, my beetle KNOWs the speed limits. I can be driving in a 60kmh,
80kmh or 100kmh zone and look down at the speedo - it will be reading almost
exactly 60, 80 or 100 as apporpriate.
Gee those VWs are smart cars :-) Listening to the beetle engine sound for 34
years has nothing to do with it.

On a different note, the texas highway patrolman that gave me the
warning was very nice. It was 4 A.M. and I had just crossed over from
New Mexico to Texas, and hadn't noticed the funny signs showing that
the speed limit is different at night. So I was still going 75, but I
was now in a 65. After talking to my dad (who was asleep in the back
seat until we got pulled over) he gave me a writen warning and let me
go.

The Cessnas are pretty easy to get around. Just look on the road for
unusual painted lines, as they need to have a starting and end point.
I see those all the time on the interstates in Michigan, though they
never monitor them.

In Australia, you first get your L - learner's permit. Once you've completed
the driving and written exam, or the progressive course (two methods), you get
your Ps - that's Provisional licence.
You have that for one year, and if no infringments, you get your full licence
and can remove the red P plate from the windows.
The P plazte in the window means that other driver's know you're less
experienced - take extra care around you. It also places restrictions on you -
like NO alcohol, where a full licence person can have up to .05. Other things
like that.
Anyone who loses their licence has to go back on Ps for a year (I guess P
spands for Punishment too :-)

Similar to over here... Once you are 17, you can apply for a
Provisional License, which once you have you can drive with the
relevant insurance etc, but only with a driver over 21 years old who
has had a clean license for at least 3 years. You have to stick
"L-Plates" on your car (L for Learner) - they sound similar to the
Australian ones, but have a red L on them.

To pass your test you have to first pass the theory (written exam on
road signs, safety, stopping distances) and then the actual practical
driving exam.
I passed first time with 6 minor points! (you are allowed up to 15
minor points and up to 3 of the same, else you fail)

me to call in for the amount then mail it in, the number was
disconected when I called in so I sent 50. incase anyways, but I got
the letter back with an unknow address stamp, Had the Provos Marshall
to call, and sent letter, but could not get anyone, I was given a
letter of protection by a Texas judge, never went to W. Va. again. Now
that I retired from the Army and back in my home town, I am lucky to
have a brother in law, as a State trooper, a cousin as a Town cop and
a cousin as a sherrif. If I get a speeding ticket I give it to them,
so far I have not gotten any. hah, yes they call me and tell me where
they are going to have the speed trap.
