I'm new to this newsgroup and new to vw's and have tons to learn. I'd
like to see some links to your cars. Here is a link to my 1966 bug that
I drove 2400 miles back from San Francisco to Minnesota...I know, I know
your not supposed to drive an aircooled that far, through the desert and
mountains, but I made it and had a blast doing it and have a bunch of
great stories to tell about it. Right now my bug is torn apart waiting
to go to the body shop to get a new coat of 2000 VW bug mint green
paint. Well I'm sure I'll be posting many questions in the future.
Here is a link to my bug:

http://204.169.29.170/vw/my_1966_vw_bug.htm

Let's see some links to your cars!

What do you mean you're not supposed to drive it that far? Wear and tear on
the drivetrain is less at constant highway speed than city traffic anyway...

I just drove from So. Cal. to Chicago (home to school at Northwestern U.).
Driving cross-country (almost) in a VW is a blast isn't it? Everything
except for the ringing in my ears... :-)

Oh... My.. God....

My sister and I drove a 67 VW Beetle from Cleveland to L.A. in 1979. We were
somewhere in Missouri when the muffler blew out, so we rode the rest of the at
about 110 db...

Actually, I think that's the only reason we didn't kill each other on the trip
-- we couldn't hear to argue, so we didn't fight.

I'm now the proud papa of a '65 VW 6-volt Beetle, and it's visible at

Enjoy!

I have a '66 too!! I can tell you that (in my opinion) they are the
best of the 'early' cars for daily drivers, especially with the 1300
engine. Mine is used everyday, and has never let my down! (touch
wood!) It has only done 39,000 miles from new, so there are plenty of
more to go yet! I will never, ever sell it (never)!

Better change that to "knock on wood", else Gareth's gonna split his

Ummm... How do I approach this? Wood, as in hardwood, like oak. Oak
tends to grow straight and rigid. Not quite like the willow, which is
flaci.... I mean flexible. I like to use good wood for my VW dash -
wood like Mahogany (this is so I can post in RAMVA;-)

Incidentally, in bowling (around here), people yell "Get your wood" or
"Get good wood" while your trying to bowl. I've dropped a ball on my
foot more than once.

If people in here insist on touching wood, I only ask that you don't
touch your wood in public.

I go for walnut in my interior... another rigid hardwood. I protect it with
several layers of lacquer (a synthetic probably related to latex somewhere).

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That's nice too Shad.
I saw a dash in a Hot Rod mag that was made of alternating light and
dark walnut (two different species?). Looked like thick laminate, that
was ground into the shape of a dash with various sanders.

I wonder if you could make a dash out of two different kinds of wood.
Would the hardness cause one layer to sand faster than the other?

Thanks all for the humorous (if juvinile - you know we all have it in us
somewhere) thread!

Uhhh, no VWG, different class. A "chubby" is under the same classification as
"plumpie", "half staff", "Mr. Softee" (on the side of the ice cream truck that
came through my neighborhood as a kid), "wannabee", etc. While yes, in many
circles, a "Chubby" does infer some level of erectocitude, it does not, in and
of itself, define "wood". Wood is wood. Chubby is simply "inflated" to some
extent.

Enough? Hope that clarifies............

Oh, I just realized I left my wife's favorite out of the terms below; "towel
hanger".

If the wood was alternating colors, it sounds like veneer on something... or
it could be just different samples put together in a board (forget the real
term here!).

As for the sanding, it could be a problem if it wasn't paid attention to.
But if looked at, there shouldn't be a problem.

Alright, sorry, I have to go off on all the wood stuff I did now...

<BRAG>
My dad was in the woodworking industry for quite awhile, usually managing or
overseeing the plant. He also once had his own company and kept some of the
equipment for hobby's sake. So, I grew up with woodworking all around me -
beautiful, huge custom pieces of furniture made for under $100 in our garage
and the like. I got my 71 Ghia and after awhile, I didn't like that plastic
"woodgrain" dash. Rather than replace it, I used contact cement, walnut
veneer, and lots of Deft lacquer to make a new one. I had 2 extra gauges at
the time and decided to put some veneer on that 2-gauge holder, too. Looked
great! (BTW - the walnut 2-gauge holder is FOR SALE if anyone is
interested). Interesting fact: a replacement plastic thing is $80. For
under $40, I did the whole dash and had supplies to spare, which helped out
in further projects :-)

Next came those door panels - the "chrome" strips had ailing chrome tape,
the pockets were aged, the padding was gone, and they looked old. I had an
idea or two... at the advice of my father, I scrapped the hardboard
backboard for the panels and made new backboards from 1/8" Luaun. I used
newer-tech closed-cell padding and marine-grade vinyl (of stock color). I
took apart one of the old side pockets and used a sewing machine to make new
ones from the new vinyl - identical replicas. I replaced those
plastic/chrome strips with aluminum - much nicer. Now, how do I remake
those heat-seamed panels? Don't :-) I used lacquered walnut veneer in
place of these heat seam panels. Again at the advice of my father, I
balanced the veneer with some cheap oak veneer on the opposite side of the
panel. I finished the job off with some piping all around. These door
panels look fabulous and will last just about forever... or at least much
longer than the stock ones did.

But, as you've guessed, I couldn't stop here. Next came the gear shift
knob. For $10, I got an excellent looking lacquered walnut knob with a
laser-cut Wolfsburg castle on it. I liked the idea of walnut between the
seats... I got some small maple spheres, cut a groove in them, and stained
and lacquered them to look like walnut. Voila! Walnut heater controls... I
found that Empi sold a walnut e-brake handle kit. I ordered it. As with
all Empi stuff, quality was crappy. I sanded it all down and refinished it.
There! Now it looks good.

I looked into walnut steering wheels, and stood back because the prices were
way too big... It stayed this way for years. In the mean time, I had
installed A/C in my car, put in a new stereo deck unit (a Denon - doesn't
need dash cutting and it looks classy, no hi-tech gaudy green buttons or
anything here), and done some gauge work: adding a 3rd extra gauge and
making all the VDO cockpit gauges look dead stock. The walnut gauge holder
looked awkward with a black A/C unit between it and the dash, so I left the
3-gauge holder black.

I started looking into the Type IV engine realm and searched through the
Recycler in So. CA for 914 engines. I happened upon some guy who had a used
walnut steering wheel for $10. I got it from him. It is the Grant-style
steering wheel. The finish was entirely gone and years of dirty hands
grabbing it and depoisiting hand oil made it look black. I polished the
chrome and sanded the walnut... for a long time :-) Added some lacquer and
boom! It looked AWESOME! Best $10 wheel ever... I got the little hub
adapter hit and a plain chrom button to go with it - quite classy.

So what do I have? I have a luxury interior that looks almost like
something VW would have offered, retaining the classy look of an old KG.
Truly, I love it.

</BRAG>

Sorry, had to... :-)

Sounds like walnut sapwood (light) and heartwood (dark).

> I wonder if you could make a dash out of two different kinds of wood.

If you're talking something like cherry and walnut, or maple and walnut,
you'd see a little difference but not enough to notice. If you're doing
something stupid like pine and lignum vitae (the hardest wood in the world)
you'd notice the difference.

If you want a really unique dash, go to http://www.walllumber.com and get
some Ipe. This is a very hard wood from South America that people are
starting to use on decks. Very unusual stock and something most people
haven't seen. Or try mahogany, which isn't as expensive as you think it is.

Heh, well, I had a friend whose favourite expression was "carpe phallum."

Treat it wrong, and it will turn the whole system off. Trust me, I know

It's true - the more attention you pay to it the more things the system will
do for you. It's pretty amazing what's possible when you figure it all out.
It's all in the special button.

Jeez people! LOL! This is my impression of the average RAMVAite:
1: Loves VW's (the aircooled variety)
2: Loves Sex
3: Finds ways to combine #1 and #2.

Err... dicks? Just don't confuse them for discs brakes and ask for dick
brakes at the parts store! ;-0

*shudder* I'd NEVER combine #1 and #2 in Isis...*shudder* The boot that
goes over the e-brake ain't in too good of condition, and there's the screws
on either side...POINTY! I know one person who's done it in a Ghia, but
that Ghia evidently had aftermarket seats and stuff...

And yes, I've gotten poked by those screws, but not while being naughty :P
At my college, we've got tiny tiny parking spots (ie, they're too small for
my Ghia, even!), and more than once I've had to crawl in from the passenger
side. There are times when I wish that a Ghia had a hatchback so I could
crawl in from the back!

Jenn,
To avoid any damage, the best solution for the ends of the e-brake cables is
to simply cover the ends with wire nuts. Wire nuts are available in various
colors that can match or cotrast with the interior of your car. I like to use
them
to not only avoid injury and tearing my clothing, but to stop them from going
through a new e-mail boot.

Wow, you've got an e-mail boot? :) Does that keep your e-mail from getting
dusty or something? ;)

And, hrmmm. I guess. I dunno, even still, a Ghia is just too small for
such things, IMHO.

I really like the way this post went, but with all the talk about "wood"
and "chubbies" I'm glad I didn't ask for pictures of yours cars with
yourselves in them.....who knows what we might have gotten then!
Anyways, does anyone have the rides up on the net........if so, let's see
some links. I hope everyone is having a great day.
