Hey Everyone......

Since I can't get a strait answer out of the WCVW group, I turn to the gorup
that will give me some information.......My Jetta could use a paint job and
I have heard mixed reviews about Maaco. I don't have the $$$ to spend on a
$5000 paint job, so I need something that will last and is fairly good.
Anybody have any horror stories or anything good to say about Maaco?
Remember, this is a 12 Year old Jetta that I plan on keeping for at least
another few years, so I can't really afford to have it rust to hell, nor can
I spend alot on the paint job itself. Any information would be greatly
apreciated!

Thanks,

Peter

One word..... Bleagh!!!

I won't go to Maaco for anything again. They couldn't even get me a touch
up bottle correctly.

Went in and asked for the bottle, guy said "OK, be ready Friday"

I went in on Friday and the same guy said "OK, that will be $X.XX, and you
can pick it up in a week". I of course asked why he had told me that it
would be ready today.

"Ummmm...... yeah, I don't know why I said that."

"Thanks for wasting me time... I'll go somewhere else."

This wasn't the first time they had screwed with me with extremely poor
customer service. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

This was the shop in Denton TX. BTW. I have heard good stories from some
people, since every store is independently owned. Those stories are few and
far between though.

One thing to remember is, Maaco's are franchised, so they will have
different levels of 'quality' from location to location.

You might ask for a small tour of the back area to see how thier operation
is. I know the local Maaco here in Vegas did, and they do some pretty good
work that I've seen last great over the last few years that I've lived here
(they do a LOT of the local VW's here in town)

If you do all the prep yourself and just bring it to them for painting they are
ok. They will take you to the cleaners if they do anything other then painting.

I had spent about two years doing body work on my bus since I don't hve a lot
of free time. Finally the initial work was starting to rust again, so I took
the time cleaned everything up and took it to Maaco here in Mobile, AL. (They
have since gone out of business) That was three years ago. Last week I parked
in from of my VW VLAPS and one of the guys asked bout the paint job. Commented
on how good it looked. I told him how old it was and he responded by saying
how shiny it still looked and asked me how often I polished it. I still
haven't polished it. Then he asked me if I kept it parked inside. I keep it
parked under an oak tree. Every Maaco is different. If you can find one that
the owner is a car restorer on his own, then you will probably get a good job.
I think the fellow here in Mobile did too good work and ended up closing.

There are a number of street rods up here that have been painted at Maaco.
Reason being the franchise owner is also a member of the street rod club.
The trick to getting a good job from Maaco is to do all the prep work
yourself and then let them take their time painting it rather than a 1 day
paint job. They are just as able in producing great paint jobs as any paint
shop. Go to Maaco and see if you can talk to the owner. Offer to pay more
than the quickie paint job and try and work out some deal.

Depending on where you live, theres probably a couple of maacos within
a 100 miles. What i did was drive up and check out the cars they had
waiting to be picked up. It all checked out. A fill in drummer for
my band actually owned a maaco, and i checked it out. He was a car
restorer himself, and his shop actually put out some really nice work.
Regardless, you should do the prep yourself. They charge a bunch for
pretty shoddy prep work, so find someone with a little experience and
duke it out on a saturday. Other than that, my car turned out great.
It was beautiful until my exgirlfriend wrecked it. But I just took it
to get washed (its been a while) and it still has a really nice shine,
and looks really nice. It only done a year ago, but a year is about
the time that a crappy job will start to show. Anyways, i've seen
some really really bad maaco jobs, a bunch of middle or the road
stuff, and then a couple really good ones. Just check out the shop
and see if you feel good about it.

So the general consensus is that Maaco is o.k., but I should really do all
the prepwork, (such as removing trim, badges, door handles, etc.) myself. I
know this will sound stupid, but the car has painted bumpers and I question
how well they would do when painting those. Anyway, thanks for the input and
keep it coming!

Randy, you took the words right out my mouth! Yes the Maaco here has done
some very nice paint jobs on club cars. As you stated, after talking with
the owners of these cars, they did their own prep and paid a couple of
hundred bucks more to ensure quality.

Now this is the kind of question I really appreciate hearing. I have a
1979 Westfalia that's in pretty decent shape, but I would like to get a
couple of minor rust problems corrected and maybe a paint job. I don't
want a shoddy job, but I also don't want to spend as much for a paint
job as I paid for the Bus.

I live in Cambridge, Mass.

So.... any suggestions for places around these parts that can do a
decent job without breaking the bank? [I don't object to a place like
Maaco as long as the local franchise is known to do a decent job.]

Suggestions???

I had a friend who had a pickup painted at Maaco and they did a terrible job
with lots of runs but I think he only got the $200 cheapie deal. I had a 94
Honda Civic painted there and I got the $600 deal and they actually did a
very nice job the only thing I noticed was that they forgot to paint the
small areas of the door mirrors that is right next to where the door is. I
took it back a couple days later & they fixed it.
