Decklid Mission

I'm on a mission.

Due to popular demand (and a few snide comments ... LOL) I have
resolved to make my decklid white before the Phoenix Boogy-o-Rama on
the 13th. Since I'll be hitting the road about 4:00 AM on the 12th, I
have about a week (and change) to work with.

The offending decklid has been removed from the car, pressure-washed
and left at American Stripping Company of Colorado Springs. They say I
can have it back (for $40) on Wednesday in all its naked metal-ness.

Now the big plan is to take the whole car apart in August (post Berg
Cruise) and spend the winter fixing, grafting, welding and otherwise
making straight and smooth all parts that should be straight and
smooth. The decklid will be dealt with right along with the rest of
the car.

Therefore the short-term decklid paint only has to do two things.

1) Protect the metal underneath. No rusticus of the ferrous stuff.

2) Be white and shiny through the summer. It almost certainly will not
match the white I am now uncovering via much rubbing of compound on
the rest of the car, but it will be closer to it than the present
yellow. Or, as some would say, yaller.

So, this will be a rattle-can job. My mission is now to find an
Etching Primer Sealer and color-coat in a can.

Seeing as this is my first attempt at car painting, it's probably good
that I'm doing something small that will be re-done fairly soon. I've
just (re)read JH's "The DIY* Paint Job" article, much of which applies
to the job at hand and most of which will apply to the winter's
activities.

Geez, that's what I should do with the other semi-straight decklid that I
have in the backyard, strip the paint down to it's barebone.

Go for the rustoleum... I will tell you this though, after 3 years on the
car and 1+ of not being washed it gets kind of dull... I'll let ya know what
happens if I wax it :) I started to wax it a few weeks after I painted it,
but that didn't do anything...

I know you're not going to leave it on, but rustoleum is great :) I may just
end up painting a whole car with it!

I have had people tell me not to use rustoleum on cars because it contains
some kind of fish oils, and while it's not a big deal initially, if you go
to paint over it later (with real automotive paint) it might not stick
right, and can cause all kinds of problems. I got this from a guy that was a
body man, so I think it's pretty reliable. Of course this was also a few
years ago, and rustoleum may have changed. I usually use Dupli-color, or go
to my local Painter's Supply and get a small batch of the correct paint,
some different kinds of primers (etching, sealing, and/or high build) in
rattle cans.
You can buy a spray "can" with a glass bottom, and fill it with the paint
you bought and away you go!

I'll never do a large part with paint cans again. A decklid is large
to me. After all the hassle of prep (which requires the same
meticulous care a pro job does), then dealing with the lousy spray
pattern and invariable dry times of a shakey-can, you could have bit
the bullet and bought a decent, small spray gun and rented a
compressor. You will then have the gun, and experience for later work,
a color you can match, and a better job to boot.

Just my two-bits worth, Max. Best of luck.

I'll have to look into that, but I have never heard anything bad about
rustoleum...

My decklid turned out fine the first time... then I dropped it trying to put
it on... and I was too impatient the second time and got 1 run... other than
that it's perfect... and you can hardly even see the run... you gotta look
for it.

It just takes mad skills to get a rattlecan job to turn out ok. I'm in the
process of prepping and primering my Jeep Wagoneer right now...I don't have
any trouble with Rustoleum primer spraying. Even looks acceptable.

This weekend at the local hot-rod hangout there was a guy with a
pickup that looked like it had undercoating on the upper surfaces! I
think he was using Armor-all to make it look shiny. Too funny!

Upper surfaces? Like the body?

If so, the newest trend in 4 wheelers is to skip the paint and use a
bedliner like Durabak for paint. They figure if they're gonna run into stuff
anyways, why waste money on paint? Durabak is cheap and so tough that it
stands up a lot better than paint could.
