Wet sand it all down with 400 grit paper. take off your taillight
housings, remove your headlights, remove the bumpers (and the little
rubber grommets that go around all this stuff.
Go to an auto paint store, and get something that is made to wipe the
car down right before you paint. I dont know what it is, as the label to
mine has long since fallen off. wipe the car down with this, to make
sure you dont get any 'fish-eye's'.
Now mask everything off, , give the entire car a good cleansing with
the stuff mentioned above, and get ready to paint.
DO NOT use a 'quick drying' paint. You will end up with more dryspots
than you can shake a stick at. get a regular, slow drying paint.
Now start spraying, I would highly suggest getting one of those cheesey
things that clip onto the spray can, to make more of a 'gun' out of it.
otherwise, your fingertip will be killing you. I've used anywhere from
4 to 6 cans to paint bugs, exterior only, allow yourself another can or
two for the interior and engine tin (if you 'really' want to make it
nice).
People dont know I've spray painted mine, until i've told them. Not
saying it looks like a really nice paint job, but it don't look too
shabby either......

After seeing Eric's bug on his web site (is that black out of a spray can??) I
am totally convinced that spraying my own Bug is in the future. I'm not so sure
about the Krylon, but that looks as good as my $500 Maaco paint job.

Do you just do one coat? What about runs- can you wet (color) sand spray paint?
What about finishing- do you apply anything before waxing, like Finesse-it or
cleaner-wax, etc. Speaking of- what kind of wax(es) do you use? Did you also
spray paint the '62 and the '66 Westy? I had a '65 Kombi (no camper) that
looked a lot like yours- I got the most attention in that VW, and not just from
the hippie crowd either.
Sorry for the bombardment, I am just intrigued by the notion or spray painting
a car!

The westy was all original paint, except the nose was re-sprayed because
the original owner got a color match put into house paint and brushed on
to fix all the rock chips. The paint was stripped, primed, and then a
local auto paint shop did a color match into spray cans for me, so that
one was 'kinda' spraypainted. just the nose, and the panel behind the
side doors.
As far as coats, I do one 'tack' coat just to get the surface sticky, to
help the unlikelyness of runs, but if i do get a run, you can sand it
down and buff it out. You can do however many coats you want, but I
usually just do two. If you wanna color sand it, you can wet sand with
1000 grit, and use meguires #2 and #9 to buff it out to a nice shine.
treat it like regular paint. One catch though, it will oxidize faster
than 'real' car paint.
I'm thinking Navy Blue will be it's next color, in time for the race
season next year. A certain someone on this group know's why...hehe
