Looking for help patching previously drilled holes, up to 2" wide,
bigger holes where steering colums have gone through that will have to
remain structural, as well as fixing cracks, and such things. Not
just fixing gel coats.
Trying to fix it right the first time so I'm not left with stress/flex
cracks in the surface paint after everything is done.
thanks!

One of the best references is The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual, by

The best way would be to get a fiberglass repair kit from any
autoparts store but before you apply it I would get some wire mesh
(sold with the bondo repair kits - usally on the same shelf as the
bondo) and on the back side of the repair install it with pop rivets
(countersunk) make the countersinks a little deep so you can fill in
the top - for me I do not use full fiberglass sheets (I am going on
what we do in the military to repair helicopter fiberglass componets)
I take a sheet and cut it up into small pieces "some call it angel
hair" and mix that in the resin - apply it to the mesh I have
installed so it protrudes out the mesh (using masking take on the back
side of the mesh so you do not loose all your fiberglass) then I take
a very thin piece of fiberglass cloth (with resin) and put over the
whole thing if you want a extra strong repair, another option is not
to put the full cloth sheet - that is reserved for big repairs small
repairs I just like to use my mixure it sands down better and you have
full satuation of the cloth pieces and resin - and I always cover
repair with wax paper (must be tight over the repair and held in place
with masking tape) - it keeps everything in place until it cures and
does not stick - then I use a vibrating sander to smooth it out really
does not take that long to do. I can always email you more detailed
instructions if you like - just send me a email at usmc_gysgt2000 at
yahoo.com (replaceing at with @)
good luck and if you have any pictures of your 87 XJ would enjoy
seeing them - I just got a 87 XJ 4.0 5 sp the end of oct as my next
daily driver/project jeep

Of course thats just my opinion, I could be wrong. -- Dennis Miller
I have a well outfited place near me, sold the boat, don't
remember the store name off hand. It is a chain.
Wow after 10 years working aircraft structures, I've never seen
anything quite like that. Would get me fired for sure. Use of wax
paper alone is not a good idea, will hold up for couple of years at
most, however the type of wax in that paper is harmful to the epoxy. I
dunno, mabey the milatary just does it diffferent. Not trying to
cause trouble.
There are lot of books onthis topic. I have a bunch of info some
where. At the moment though I'm moveing into a new place and all my
books a packed away. What mud sugested will work for the time bieng,
however It's really not that stong and will crack out. Any repairs to
fiberglass should be tapperd to prevent stress constration, other wise
it will crack out. If I get me books out soon I'll list a couple of
good topics for you that you can get at b&n.com. The book that dell
gave you earlier is a great one, will probly give you all you need
