I need to get another windshield bracket for my 89 YJ (right one broke
a while back and needs to be replaced.) I have looked for a
replacement and got a dealer quote for $131 for one! So I started
looking for black powder coated ones. All I found were ones made by
Steel Horse (and they place I went to swears by them too.) And I don't
want the stainless steel ones so anyone know of any other place to get
regular ones cheaper than the dealer or black powder coated ones NOT
made by steel horse? Thanks for any help

Are you saying that I can get Steel Horse stuff as long as I have it
repainted? Just making sure cause that would be another added expense
plus I would hope the hinges still work after the repaint.

I'm saying that I doubt that Steel Horse's steel itself is bad. Their
history on this type of part, according to myself and others in this NG, is
that their stuff rusts too soon, which to me indicates poor paint. If your
only choices are Sheel Horse or $131 from a dealer, I'd choose painting a
Steel Horse hinge. You could just buy one and some factory paint in a can
and not bother with the black or stainless look.

Of course they will work after they are repainted. I'm confused why you
would think they would not. This whole thing is not that big of a deal.
Just buy one, hit it with a spray can of whatever color you choose, and put
it on.

Or you can try taking the plain steel part to a chrome shop and
they can chrome it for you.

Besides premature rust, I've also noticed either poor fit or poor
quality on all but one Steelhorse product I ever purchased. Several
spotwelds broke on a tailight cover as I attempted to mount it on the
rear tail light. And get this... they were labeled as stainless steel
but a magnet held near them proved they weren't... at least not good
quality stainless steel (good quality stainless steel is is not
attracted to a magnet). Of the half-dozen Steelhorse items I bought
when I didn't know better, I ended up returning five of them for either
poor quality or poor fit. The only Steelhorse product that is still on
my TJ are the two front towhooks. Even those rusted when still new but
since re-painting them with Rustoleum, they've been fine.

I have always had bad luck with painting hinges and other moving parts
in that they freeze up when painted. I still need to lower and raise
the windshiled every now and then. Should I expect any problems in
that respect?

I just painted mine and I filled the hinge joint with grease first.
After the paint dried, the paint on the joint just fell off the grease.
