94-97 Accord A/C

I've seen many postings about A/C problems for 1994-97 Accords. People
usually complained about waek A/C or musty odours coming from the system
and usually for the 1994 model. Does anyone have these same experiences
with 95-97 models? I'm thinking of buyng a 95 or 96 and wonder if these
issues have been resolved.

I have a '96 4cyl LX accord with a weak AC. It was, I believe, the first
year to use the new "freon" (R132). I believe that the '95 used the dreaded

ozone-eating freon that works to cool the car.

No, it was HCFC 134 in the 95. US regulations required all the new cars to
use it by that time.

The '95 Accord A/C unit is OK in the hot Dallas TX climate, but that's
with a white car (makes a big diff, IMO).

No musty odors in mine, but I have heard that if you run recirc all the
time (which boosts the cooling) you will get this effect. If they have
improved the cooling capacity in models after 95, I have not heard of
this. My 95 is reasonably capable in a severe climate, but that's just an
opinion...

my 95 does fine here where it gets _very_ hot (Central California). It
uses the new stuff--not freon. The difference may be that I have the

Directly from the horses mouth at Honda. To PREVENT the musty smell, you
simply keep running the fan and switch the setting to "VENT" and let the
system air out for a minute or so. No musty smells in my '97 Accord EX
Coupe.

If you want your A/C compressor to last, press the A/C switch on or off
ONLY when the engine is running. This will allow the compressor clutch to
properly disengage. It is not good for the compressor to just stop or
start while it's clutch is engaged. Your A/C compressor should last. I
used this procedure and my '86 Integra's A/C compressor still worked fine
after 10 years.

The first year for the R134a in the Accord was indeed 1994. All earlier
models used the older R12. I have a 1996 Honda Accord EXL coupe and the A/C
in it works fairly well for R134a (which has never been as cool as Freon).
I did add some 50% tint all the way around on my car which reduced the
burden on my A/C considerably. Shut the moonroof cover when you park the
car and put a sun screen up in the windshield and it'll make for a lot less
work for the A/C when you get back in the car. BTW, my car is Sherwood
Green Metallic which is the dark green w/ivory leather. The dark colors
seem to suck in the heat more obviously.

I have a 1995 Accord LX 4-cyl also with weak A/C. I'm about 80 miles
shy of 36,000 miles. So.... I have a warranty appointment on
Wednesday so the dealer can check the A/C and let me know if it needs
a fix or if they're all weak!

I own a 97 Accord LX V6 and it takes 10 to 15 minutes to cool the interior
on a hot day. Recirculating Air is not an option. The dealer checked the
system and found no problems. You may also notice the sloppy feel of the
temperature control dial.

A lot of 94' Accords experienced problems with the temp control dial cable
(air mix cable) coming out of adjustment. My 94 Accord LX suffered from
inadeqaute AC cooling because the air mix valve wasnt fully closed even
though the knob was set on the coolest setting. Once I had the cable
adjusted the AC was nice and frigid. If you experience play in the temp
knob before you actually feel the cable pull, it is out of adjustment. If
you have a 94 manual check out page 21-24 & 21-25 "Air Mix Control Cable"
