Keyless Entry Remote Programming

Does anyone know how to do this?
My second, spare, remote has stopped working. I had assumed
that its batteries had simply gone dead, but replacing them
did not help. This remote mostly sat in a drawer, so it
isn't like it stopped working after being dropped or something
like that. However, over the years, stuff has happen like my
Mustang's battery dying, and I am now guessing (hoping)
that I just lost the programming for the second remote
somewhere along the line.
I read through this thread, and all the replies only complained
about how much Ford charges to do it.
If anyone has the procedure, could you please post it?

For the '99's, the Owner's manual says -
1) Turn key from OFF to ON eight times within 10 seconds ending
in the ON position.
2) After doors lock then unlock, press any button on the
remote being programmed.
3) The doors should lock/unlock to confirm programming.
4) Turn key to OFF and door locks should cycle one last time.
You can program up to four remotes this way, but they must
all be done at the same time (repeat step 2 for each).

I don't know how to do it, but when I had my local Ford dealer (actually
Lincoln Mercury) on my 95 GT (they did it for free, BTW) the fiddled with
something in the trunk, I think by the fuel cut-off switch - but I wasn't in
perfect view so I don't know for sure what they did.

As it turned out, my hopes turned out to be true. I did
indeed simply loose the programming for the second remote.
I guess over the years, something happened, which caused
the system to only be programmed for my main remote which
I use daily. I still think it was when the Mustang's
battery died and the power bouncing up and down as I
tried in vain to start and jump it.
I did find the instructions on www.deja.com but searching
threw the Explorer news group instead of this one. A
posting by Dennis Hunt (Denni...@Home.com) had some
excellent step-by-step instructions. My Mustang has the
type of remote entry system which requires shorting the two
pins on a programming connector instead of turning the
ignition switch 'on' and 'off' umpteen times. The programming
connector is on the left side of the trunk, just in front
of the remote module (and alarm module). Following
Dennis's instructions, it only took a few minutes to
complete.
I guess one suggestion is that if others have a remote which
stops working, try re-programming it first before paying
Ford big-bucks for a replacement!
