Bought 1997 JGC Limited used in Sept. from a local Nissan dealership. About
three weeks after getting it I noticed an occasional "hiccup" when driving
on the highway using the cruise control. The whole truck would stall for a
second and then continue as normal, except the cruise light would go out and
I would lose the cruise control. If I set it again, it would be fine...for a
while, sometimes even for the rest of the trip. Even more seldom of an
occurrence was an occasional stall while sitting at a traffic light. But
only a very few times.
At the time I thought maybe I had some bad gasoline in it and was
experiencing "knocks". So I put a tank of premium gas in it. That didn't
help immediately. In fact, the problem seemed to get progressively worse.
After a few more days I experienced more hiccups on the highway and the Jeep
started stalling two or three times at traffic lights per trip.
So I took the it to the Nissan dealer. They told me to take it to a local
Chrysler/Jeep dealer down the street because their diagnostics computer
couldn't communicate with a Jeep. The Jeep dealer charged me $85.00 to hook
it up to their computer. After two days in the shop and test driving, they
told me they could not get it to stall, nor could they get an error to
register on the computer. They suggested I replace (for $250) the crank
shaft trigger and the ignition coil. They could NOT guarantee it would fix
it, but they guessed one of those was the culprit. I told them to hold on
and I would check with my extended warranty with Nissan.
Now about two weeks after the gas change, all symptoms STOPPED. No hesitance
on the highway, no stalling at lights. I was baffled but thought that maybe
it was the gas and the old gas just made it's way completely out of the
system. Not quite....
No problems for the next two weeks, then they all started again. This time
the problems were worse. Secondary stalling on the highway, conking out at
stop lights....and now...completely cutting off when pulling away from the
intersection! NOT GOOD! A couple of times even dangerous! So it is now back
in the Nissan dealer's hands. They have had it since last Thursday (5 days)
and they replaced the two parts the Jeep dealer suggested. With both parts
installed it still stalls, even for them. They were taking it over to the
Jeep dealer to have them put it back on the computer (hopefully it will
stall this time).
I will apologize in advance for the long winded story. Does this sound
familiar to you or anyone?
Thanks!

Now on my second trip back to the Nissan dealership. My service manager has
sent my JGC to another local Jeep dealer. I gave my guy PGL's comments on
the fuel pump and he is going to pass it on. The Jeep dealer DID get my JGC
to stall and it is on the computer. So hopefully we will get to the bottom
of this.
I'll keep you all updated for general prosperity....
Thanks, all.

I got the Jeep back yesterday (Friday). After my Nissan dealer sent it to
the local Jeep Dealer, the Jeep guy put it on the computer and it did fault
out. He then determined that I had a bad computer board (?) and he replaced
it. I'm not quite sure what computer board it was but the Nissan guy made it
sound like it was a "main" board and it was pretty significant. FORTUNATELY,
this board was covered under Jeep's Factory warranty! So guess how much I
paid for this little excursion.....NOTHING!!! As you all know, these type of
car experiences are not very frequent...so I will revel in this one for a
few minutes!
Hope this helps someone out there. If you have a similar circumstance and
need any specific information feel free to email me and I'll see what I can
do.
Bye all!
