Train broke down last night, so I drove home, which meant I had to
drive back up this morning (5 oceanside to irvine). It really sucked
worse that I remembered, and took longer than it used to (two hours
door-to-door, vs mode hour-twenty when I did it every day). Radio
doesn't even bother to say problems on NB5, 'cause, how can you tell?

This one on old 395 near where I live:

I remember him being the host at IHOP. Last night there were votive
candles at the crash site.
Yeah, 2001 New Beetle bought from the proverbial little old lady who
only drove it on Sundays to her volunteer job at the adobe where she
tore up the undersides on the rutted dirt trails and banged up the
plastic fenders. Turned out she went to my high school when my
brother did (circa 1959). Good for toodling around Irvine, but harsh
at 80 on the 5 for an hour. Only 65K miles on it now. It turns out
it can indeed be true it's fun to drive a slow car fast.

Yes, it is much nicer than the oceanside one, not to mention they let
you park overnight.

The train boss, the train!
Because the funding was a mixture of Caltrans, City, and Federal
Transit Authority, so the city gets to patrol and collect fines.
Overnight or longer has to park outside in the salt air next to the
rustbucket truck that slams his door into your car. They ticket
aggressively at 2:00AM. There's a lot of redevelopment going on
downtown there, so it makes sense for city to have parking. I'd
almost go for one of those condos they just auctioned off, or the new
ones overlooking the lagoon, if I didn't have wife and kids to worry
about. There's actually some good restaurants down there now. Still
some hookers and lotsa jarheads, but much better than 20 years ago,
and much nicer than, say, downtown Long Beach.
The garage is a lot dustier than Irvine too, after a week of daily
parking, car is covered with schmutz. At least part of it is diesel
exhaust from the bus transfer area right next to it.

How recent is this redevelopment? I was last in downtown Oceanside,
about 2 years ago, and wasn't too impressed. Carlsbad and Encinitas,
on the other hand, both feature small but lively & attractive downtown
center's, with a good collection of restaurants and shops.
Of course, they are much nicer. They are also much more expensive.
It's not an urban legend that there are places where identical houses
across the street from each other on the Oceanside/Carlsbad line vary
by $100K. I'd rather live in either than Oceanside. All the cities
have neighborhoods with unique characteristics. A big part of the
pricing is schools.
It hasn't changed too much in the last 2 years, except for the condo's
I was referring to, and a hotel. The ones across from the station
have a nice ocean view, but it will be restricted by hotel development
eventually. Not too impressive, agreed. But really, one of the very
few places in socal where there are reasonably priced places to live
near the beach. And if you want to live near the beach, you have to
be rich or desirous of funkiness, or both. There are also nasty slums
not too far away. Real cheap condos there...
All three cities have Vigilucci's. I remember when that guy was a
waiter in the Thai restaurant in Encinitas.
