I may be mistaken, but I think the 512TR is ABS-less. I know the 348 has ABS,
and the 512GT America(to be released later this year) will likely have ABS. I
guess they figure more poseurs who drive like idiots will go for the ~$120,000
348 than the $195,000 512TR.

Righto! But as soon as Enzo passed on, the 1989 328 got ABS - Enzo had vetoed
it on EVERY car produced by Ferrari until that 328. The hi-perf folks at
Ferrari are apparently still calling the shots at the real exotic end: 512TR,
the successor to the F40 et al. :)

A side note: I've not seen ANY idiot Ferrari drivers here in NorCal, unless its
the guy in the red (what else?) TR who blew by me at about 130 on 280 at
Belmont! I was in my 1988 329 (no ABS :)) at the time, so there was no
point intrying to catch him. The TR was NOT Larry Ellison (Oracle Pres),
since it didn't say "1000TPS" on the license. I guess idiots don't generally
buy Ferraris, but choose to purchase Lexus or Porche instead.

you probably haven't been looking in the right place.

i've been to lots of track events that have had their share of
Ferraris and Porsches; i've met some pretty cool people and good drivers
at these events, and i've met some very serious snobs and assholes
in both types of car.

i will say that the Porsche Club has the best driver education program
of any of the major marque clubs, with the BMW club close behind and
catching up. there are some in the Ferrari club who are trying to
improve their program, but it's turning out to be a bit of a tough job,
from what i hear. i will also say that in general, the intermediate
and advanced drivers in Porsche Club events have usually managed to
lose their obnoxious attitudes; most of the attitude problems at PCA
events are beginners and spouses. just as the FCA's driver education
program is not up to the PCA's, they have a higher percentage of attitudes
amongst their drivers. i'll wager that with time this will shift;
some of the prominent figures in the FCA are very nice people who want
things to improve.

of course, there will still be all the jerks on the street with no
training and big attitudes; not much you can do about that.

cheers,
richard

So, this is the deal: everybody slower than you is a jerk, and
everybody faster than you is a maniac.

There is a BBC program about the history of motor racing being shown here
at the moment. One of the drivers for the Ferrari team was describing a
1960's ferrari for Le-Mans. The windscreen was a flat sheet with no
deferrence to aerodynamics and made the car slow on the straights. The
quote from Enzo Ferrari was. "Aerodynamics are for people who can't design
engines"... This was apparently very typical of Enzo Ferrari.

In the light of this attitude saying ABS is bad 'cos Enzo(TM) didn't like
it doesn't seem like a very convincing argument. They would still have flat
winscreens if he had had his way.

No, this is the deal: 130mph on 280 when there are lots of other cars around is
idiotic. I've observed lots of really dumb things by Porshe and Lexus drivers
- seems to be a higher percentage (based on my non-random observations) of
foolish Porshe and Lexus drivers than Ferrari drivers. Maybe it's because
doctors and salespeople driver Porshes and Lexus, and people who actually like
cars drive Ferraris?
